The current healthcare system is plagued with complexities that often prevent physicians from providing both the high-quality care they desire, and the care their patients need to live healthier lives. Press Ganey President and Chief Physician Executive Amy Compton-Phillips, MD believes #VytalizeHealth's value-based care (VBC) solution can change that. For #NationalNursesWeek, Vytalize's Cindy DeMars, RN, shares why she became a nurse 32 years ago! Here's what she has to say about the inspiration behind her career choice: My decision to go into nursing 32 years ago can be summed up in one word: Lola. Although my grandmother Lola was not a licensed nurse, she inspired me to become one. I grew up watching her live out the Nightingale Pledge. Lola treated the ill to the best of her ability and carried them to professionals when things were clearly beyond her scope. She preserved the privacy of those she assisted with no intentional harm and was dedicated to the welfare of anyone who crossed her path, whether they were strangers, friends, or family. Lola, who was born in 1915, volunteered in her retirement years at the Agency on Aging and delivered Meals on Wheels because, in her words, "[she loved] 'old people.'" Lola often said she wished she had gone to school to be a nurse, and regularly, she visited the nursing home to shave her blind brother – not because the care assistants wouldn't, but because she wanted to care for him in some way, touch him, and make him feel loved and human. As I grew older, I heard stories about how Lola cared not only for her parents in their elder years, but also for some extended family who had finished prison or jail sentences and needed help getting employment and a fresh start. Additionally, at one point, Lola and her family lived by the railroad tracks where doors of generous people were in some way 'marked' by people experiencing homelessness and those who jumped the trains. This act let others in need know the person behind the door was willing to help. Her door was marked, and when someone knocked, she would greet them, touch them, share a hot meal or blanket, etc. She loved others well and modeled this to her neighbors and family, which is why I went to nursing school and continue to work in nursing.

This #NationalNursesWeek, #VytalizeHealth honors the dedication of nurses worldwide. Their commitment to improving patient care is truly remarkable.    Our healthcare solutions aim to support and empower these heroes in their vital work. Today, we celebrate their achievements and pivotal role in our communities by highlighting one of our own, Denise Bitz, NP.    Check out Denise's favorite thing about being a Vytalize nurse:   My favorite thing about being a Home Visit Nurse Practitioner for Vytalize is that I get to see the patient in their home environment, which allows me to create a holistic treatment plan. Oftentimes, the biggest challenges in keeping patients out of the hospital can be environmental factors such as food insecurity, lack of transportation, medication mismanagement, and safety issues in the home. I feel patients are so appreciative of this program because it shows that we really care about them as whole people and want to keep them happy, healthy, and out of the hospital.
