About us
At Volunteers of America, we are more than a nonprofit organization. We are a ministry of service that includes 16,000 paid, professional employees dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Through our hundreds of human service programs, including housing and healthcare, Volunteers of America touches the lives of 1.5 million people in over 400 communities in 46 states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico each year. Since 1896, we have supported and empowered America's most vulnerable groups, including veterans, at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men and women returning from prison, homeless individuals and families, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions. Our work touches the mind, body, heart — and ultimately the spirit — of those we serve, integrating our deep compassion with highly effective programs and services. Approximately 60,000 volunteers throughout the country help our employees deliver these life-changing services

Pam Fontz has never been one to sit on the sidelines and watch others do the work. For this Maryland native, volunteering in her community or helping her family at the house is part of her DNA. After meeting her Navy husband, Cody, they moved to Washington state to start a life together. After 50 years together, Cody passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Pam found herself taking classes at the Volunteers of America Western Washington Carl Gipson Center to reconnect with her community and her passions. Now a Senior Advisory Committee member, Pam is living her life to the fullest. #seniorcitizenday Learn more about our services for older adults: https://lnkd.in/dtU3fNBR

Rita Nakashima Brock, SVP of Moral Injury Programs, sat down with former fire captain and law enforcement officer Jerry Lund on Enduring the Badge Podcast to talk about moral injury. Many first responders don’t realize the trauma they are experiencing is also ethically and morally compromising, but through therapeutic practices and channeling one’s inner strength, there is hope. At VOA, building #healthycommunities4all means reaching across the margins to provide equitable healthcare for at-risk populations. In a recent article from Fortune about at-home technology for older adults, our VP of Community Health Innovation Cindy C. shared the challenges that low-income seniors face in operating medical devices and urged for agencies to consider the “low digital and health literacy skills" that certain populations have to navigate. At VOA, we believe every kid has the power to make a difference in their community. That’s part of the reason for Camp POSTCARD (Volunteers of America Northern New England), our signature summer camp that breaks down barriers with first responders and law enforcement officers. Meet Christine Buchanan, a former DARE officer who co-founded Camp POSTCARD in Maine 30 years ago. Returning to camp every year as a director, Christine has influenced the lives of more than 4,000 young people. #internationalyouthday Watch this story on Camp POSTCARD from News Center Maine WCSH6: https://lnkd.in/etv-Gqu9
