As we continue to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, we’re profiling this rising engineering star. Inspired by the possibility of improving healthcare outcomes for individuals worldwide, Kathryn Lakatos pursued Biomedical Engineering, combining engineering and biology principles to develop solutions that directly impact patient care. Her connections led to an internship and a career at Volk Optical Inc., a Halma company with a mission of eradicating preventable blindness through accessible imaging of the eye. In 2023 Kathryn helped to launch a new surgical lens used by vitreoretinal surgeons, the company’s first new lens in five years, and she also supported the software development of Volk’s VistaView™ which enables those who live far from healthcare facilities to have their eyesight tested, particularly those in remote communities that may otherwise be underserved. #INWED2024 #EnhancedByEngineering #WomenInHalma #WomenInSTEM

We recently had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Maayan E. Keshet, M.D., Medical Director at City Eye MD in New York City, who is among the first eye care professionals to introduce our new VIVA Non-Mydriatic Handheld Fundus Camera to her practice. We spoke about how VIVA will fill current obstacles with traditional imaging and how she plans to use VIVA. Dr. Keshet specializes in cataract, cornea, and refractive disease. “What sets me apart from other doctors is my approach to vision correction and tailoring my recommendations and treatments to the patient's needs” says Keshet. Dr. Keshet is excited about the future of eye care and integrating VIVA into her daily workflow. "A portable fundus camera can be invaluable in treating patients with disabilities and/or special needs in the office. A large table-top fundus camera cannot be used to image retinas in wheelchair bound patients or those with abnormal anatomy or musculoskeletal disorders.
