Thank you to Neil Barsky for continuing to call attention to America's out-of-control—and preventable—diabetes epidemic. Check out his latest piece, questioning why proven nutritional approaches for weight loss and diabetes reversal (like Virta's) are still being ignored by the FDA ADA—and how this decision is harming patients.

Nowhere are health equity issues more apparent than in type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic health. For those in disadvantaged communities, and for certain racial and ethnic minority groups (in particular Black, Native American, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander populations), rates of diabetes far surpass the national average. These populations are also more likely to be on medications to manage their diabetes, and to experience worse outcomes, including death or severe complications such as amputation and blindness. In one zip code in South Carolina, for example, amputation rates are nearly 40 times greater than other Deep South communities. Stunningly, on a national basis, 52-80% of patients who receive a lower-leg amputation will die within five years. This is horrifying and has to stop. We initiated an effort to more deeply understand how Virta affects patients from different backgrounds: https://lnkd.in/gkEf2whD

Everyone’s talking about GLP-1s. But what do the providers writing the prescriptions think about GLP-1s for weight loss? A new survey of 300 PCPs, endocrinologists and obesity-certified specialists explores what’s really happening within the four walls of the doctors office between the patients asking for weight loss drugs and the providers trying to support them.
