Established in 1895, the Village of Pinehurst is a scenic resort community and the largest municipality in Moore County. It may be best known as home to the world-renowned Pinehurst No. 2 golf course where both the U.S. Men’s Open and the U.S. Women’s Open Championship were played in 2014. No. 2 was also host to the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Men’s Open Championship, among many other golfing events and tournaments. In 1996, the Village of Pinehurst was given National Landmark status for its significant role in U.S. golf history. This is the only golf-related designation of its kind in the United States. Centrally located in the Sandhills of North Carolina, the Village of Pinehurst is an easy one hour drive from Raleigh, two hours from the beach and three hours from the Blue Ridge Mountains. The heart of the Village is a unique array of shops and bistros that offers something for everyone. Safeguards Consulting, Inc. would like to congratulate our Village of Pinehurst friends on being selected as a winner of the Leading the Way Award in the Winter of 2023 by ETC Institute, a national survey and research firm. The award was created to help recognize local governments for outstanding achievement in the delivery of services to residents. “This is a direct result of our organizational culture and our commitment to our core values of service, initiative, teamwork, and improvement,” stated Village Manager Jeff Sanborn. In addition, to their recent award, we are also excited to share the Pinehurst Resort will be opening Pinehurst No.10 on April 3rd! The course, which is a beautiful Tom Doak design, began construction in January of 2023. This will also be the first original golf course Pinehurst Resort has unveiled in nearly 30 years! The opening date is also set just a few months before the U.S. Open Championships returns to Pinehurst for the 4th time. “We’re delighted to have a date to begin presenting this incredible design by Tom Doak to our guests. On Tuesday, February 27, Village Manager Jeff Sanborn notified Council Members of his intentions to resign from his position effective October 25, 2024. “Leading our exceptional Village staff has been one of the most rewarding professional experiences I have had in my life,” said Sanborn. “I know that we have the right people and systems in place to ensure continued success after I am gone.” The Village has operated at a very high level during Sanborn’s tenure while maintaining the lowest tax rate of all municipalities in Moore County. His leadership didn’t go unnoticed, receiving the Certificate of Excellence in Performance Management each year since 2018. Residents of Pinehurst also recognize his leadership by consistently rating multiple Village services and areas of customer service more highly than any other local government across the country--based on results of the annual community surveys. Most recently, the Village was awarded with the Leading the Way Award by the ETC Institute. Sanborn was appointed by the Council in June 2015 after an honorable 27-year career in the U.S. Army, where he retired as a Colonel. Council members are now tasked with finding Sanborn’s successor. “Jeff has been a tremendous leader to a high-performing staff. His presence will be missed,” said Mayor Patrick Pizzella. “Council will work closely with administration to ensure a smooth transition.”
