Ending extreme poverty in rural Africa. Building a sustainable future for all.
About us
We believe it is possible to end extreme poverty. But climate change, conflict, and other shocks are threatening the progress that has been made. Backed by rigorous evidence, we have a solution that lifts families in rural Africa out of extreme poverty, improves their well-being and resiliency, and ensures a brighter future for generations to come. Partnering with governments, nonprofits, United Nations agencies, conservation organizations, and private sector companies, Village Enterprise equips women, refugees, and youth living in extreme poverty with the resources and skills to become first-time business owners and start climate-smart businesses and savings groups. For over 30 years, we have worked in rural African communities where most people live on $2.15 a day or less. Over 97% of our team is African, and more than 83% of our entrepreneurs are female. To date, we have impacted the lives of more than 2 million people in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo-Brazzaville, Tanzania, and Mozambique. To learn more about our work to eradicate extreme poverty and how our model empowers women, youth, and refugees, cultivates resilience against climate change, and protects the environment and endangered species, visit our website.

Village Enterprise, together with CHASP Advisory, recently provided comprehensive training for county officials from the Government Of Makueni County, Taita Taveta, and West Pokot on our integrated management information system. This digital tool supports the behind-the-scenes efforts of our poverty graduation model, and will provide these county governments with the capacity to effectively measure program outcomes, keep accurate records, and use data to drive impactful change in their communities. Together with these county officials, Village Enterprise was able to use their feedback and refine the system for each county's unique implementation needs. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this initiative has developed an effective tool which will help these county governments make informed, data-driven decisions that will lift many women, men, and children out of extreme poverty in rural Kenya. #PovertyGraduation #CollectiveAction

🌳 In Uganda's Kibale National Park, something beautiful is happening. Where survival once meant relying on poaching and illegal lumbering, rural communities are now protecting and safeguarding their home. We asked Jjumba Martin to capture the stories of these remarkable women and men who have launched climate-smart businesses through Village Enterprise's PARKS project. Equipped with the resources and mentorship to launch their own businesses, communities around the park are creating reliable sources of income that don't rely on harming wildlife or the vital ecosystems that sustain them. As a result, our entrepreneurs are breaking generational cycles of extreme poverty and building sustainable livelihoods, while habitats and wildlife flourish. The PARKS project is funded by the Arcus Foundation and implemented in partnership with Ngogo Chimpanzee Project. To date, this project has already transformed the lives of 20,000 people across the park and helped protect one of the largest remaining populations of endangered East African chimpanzees.

“My dream for my girls is that they are educated up to university level, and that they are role models in our community.” —Milcah Milcah, a mother of five and a successful businesswoman in West Pokot, Kenya, has helped lift her family out of extreme poverty. But to get to where she is today, she’s had to overcome many challenges. At a young age, Milcah was forced to drop out of school to get married. The dowry was then used to pay for her brothers to continue their education. Determined to create a brighter future for herself and her daughters, Milcah launched a business through Village Enterprise. Even though it's uncommon for women to own a business in West Pokot, she started grinding and selling maize, turning it into a local food known as posho. Her business not only took off—it's also helped reduce hunger in her community and allowed her to pay school fees for all of her children, including her daughters 🌟
