🚨🐾 New Legislation Alert: Animals Included in Protection Orders In 2023, a notable trend emerged with laws allowing animals to be included in protection orders, aiding domestic violence victims and their pets. This recognizes the link between animal cruelty and domestic abuse, where abusers often exploit animals to control or torment their victims. As of December 2023, 40 states and 3 territories permit courts to include animals in protection orders. Delaware and Nebraska joined this list by enacting laws specifically allowing companion animals in domestic violence protection orders. While most laws grant custody of the animal to the victim seeking protection, some simply prohibit harm to the animal. Additionally, many laws are species-specific, focusing on companion animals like dogs or cats. Even in states without explicit laws, judges can typically include animal protection provisions. However, specific laws are vital for awareness and consideration. These measures ensure the safety of both human and animal victims of domestic violence, marking a significant step forward in legal protection. 🏛️🐶 For more information, visit https://buff.ly/4fDHbO5 Image credit: Animal Legal Defense Fund #AnimalLaw #DomesticViolence #LegalProtection #AnimalWelfare #Legislation
