We were proud to sponsor the 100th birthday event for Roy Gibson at the UK House of Lords in London last week, to honor his tremendous contribution to the European, UK and commercial space sector, and in particular to his important role in bringing INMARSAT’s vision to life in its infancy. Roy Gibson’s legacy is impressive. It is through his work with the intergovernmental organization INMARSAT (now Viasat) that 1.9 million seafarers every day can rely on our safety services at sea; tens of millions of people over the decades have been supported in the disaster theatre and many others in the aviation world as well. Viasat VP Government Engagement, James Cemmell FRAeS paid tribute to Roy Gibson at the event, “The leadership that you showed over the many phases of your extraordinary career have inspired us to be where we are today and for that we all owe you a profound debt of gratitude and we hope that you continue to stay involved in the space community and inspire those who are coming forwards now.” Also in attendance were INMARSAT’s first Director General, Olaf Lundberg and satellite supremo Franco Carnevale, along with Viasat’s Lucy Howard-Hudgell, Johnny Nemes, Colin Ward, Peter Broadhurst, and Mark Dickinson. 📷 1: Roy Gibson | 📷 2: Roy Gibson and James Cemmell | 📷 3: Roy Gibson and Lord Heseltine listening to a speech by Lord Willetts, Chair UK Space Agency and former Science Minister | 📷 4: Roy Gibson and Paul Bate, CEO UK Space Agency Photo credit: UK Space Agency

Satellite communication is an important part of India's digital infrastructure, and it is essential that we have a robust and efficient framework to ensure that this critical infrastructure can continue to grow and meet the needs of the country's growing population. Viasat India's Managing Director, Gautam Sharma, recently participated in an advisory meeting led by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to discuss areas of interventions to ensure higher penetration of reliable and high-quality telecom services throughout the country. India is on the cusp of a new era in satellite communications, and we are excited to be a part of it. Our expertise in this field can help India make the most of this opportunity, and we believe that collaboration among satellite companies will be essential as India adapts to the new regulations. Cheers to 45 amazing years, Inmarsat Maritime!
Today marks a significant milestone as we celebrate the origins of Inmarsat Maritime, which was established an intergovernmental organization on July 16, 1979. 🎉 This date also commemorates the introduction of the IMSO convention, a pivotal framework that ensures the provision of satellite-based maritime distress communication services integral to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Since its inception, Inmarsat Maritime, in collaboration with the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO), has been dedicated to the safety of seafarers worldwide, providing around-the-clock support to ensure that every vessel at sea remains connected to shore, equipped with the up-to-date safety information. As we honour this legacy of lifesaving innovation, we continue our journey as part of Viasat, ensuring that we keep seafarers safe wherever they are. As IMSO celebrates 45 years, we're also celebrating 25 years as a commercial company, and this is not just a time to look back at our achievements, it's also about looking forward to new opportunities and advancements under the Viasat umbrella. Here's to continuing our mission of saving lives at sea with even greater impact. And happy anniversary IMSO.
