Standards for a Sustainable Future

About us

Verra works to provide standards for a sustainable future that address pressing environmental and sustainable development issues. Through robust standards, we help accurately quantify benefits and drive investment in responsible, high-performing projects and programs. We work closely with partners in civil society, governments and the private sector to develop novel frameworks and enable results on the ground. Our flagship standard, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, is the longstanding leading standard in the voluntary carbon market. Since our start in 2009, Verra has expanded our work into new arenas based on increasing demand for social and environmental standards. Today, a growing staff with operatives around the world manage our standards and programs, including the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standard, the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard and the Landscape Standard. We consistently work with our partners to ensure that our existing and new requirements reflect the most current knowledge and global best practice. We are steadily expanding the scope of Verra to respond to the need for new, forward-thinking standards, with a focus on market-based, workable solutions to thorny social and environmental challenges. Verra was originally founded by a collection of business and environmental leaders who saw a need for greater quality assurance in voluntary carbon markets. Our founding partners - The Climate Group, International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and The World Economic Forum - convened a team of global carbon market experts to draft the first Verified Carbon Standard requirements. World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) joined the effort soon after.

Today, we celebrate the landmark statement from the U.S. government underlining the importance of the voluntary carbon market (VCM).    We know high-integrity #CarbonCredits give companies and emitters the ability to do more, and to do it faster than cutting internal emissions alone. We also know companies that buy carbon credits through the VCM are leaders in climate action. The White House has now made the case for the VCM even stronger: the time has come for this climate solution. Verra is the leading standards setter in the VCM, and we continue to promote rigor, transparency, and vigilance for science-backed and consensus-driven standards. Verra is committed to certifying high-quality projects and issuing high-integrity credits that represent real, additional, and permanent emission reductions and reward co-benefits, while also including critical social and environmental safeguards. Our core mission is to unlock investment in tangible climate action. We applaud the United States for supporting this key climate action tool. Verra has submitted feedback to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on the draft design of a program that would enable America’s farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners to participate in the voluntary carbon market by identifying high-integrity protocols (i.e., methodologies) for generating carbon credits. Verra’s written comments underscored the following key points: 🚜 Verra commends the administration’s recent commitment to a high-integrity carbon market. 🚜 Verra believes in the rigor necessary to ensure the generation of high-quality credits and a strong carbon market. 🚜 Verra believes that the USDA should utilize the existing infrastructure of greenhouse gas crediting programs for guidance to ensure high-integrity action in the carbon market and efficient project development and management processes. Verra also recommended that the USDA evaluate several Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodologies for listing under its program and review the VCS Program as a whole. 🗣️📣⭐ Welcome to our new Voices of Verra series! Our team members are at the heart of what we do. In this new series, we take you behind the scenes at Verra, letting you hear directly from our talented staff: who they are, what they do, and what they are passionate about. Today, meet Cassio Souza, director, Program Secretariat! ❓What do you do here at Verra, and what brought you to Verra? ➡️ I am the director of the Program Secretariat Team at Verra, which is part of the Program Management Department. My daily routine covers three main areas: overseeing the Operational Excellence Team that is in charge of project review assignments and timely pipeline listings of projects, leading the Stakeholder Support Team to ensure prompt responses to project inquiries, and helping to manage data collection to systematize in dashboards for monitoring KPIs and decision-making. Before joining Verra, I spent 15 years in the agriculture sector, focusing on sustainability and best agricultural management practices that have a positive effect on biodiversity. Three things drew me to Verra: the connection between operational efficiency and sustainability results, Verra's global presence, and the values of transparency and balance that are pivotal to Verra’s work. ❓What part of your work do you feel has the most impact? ➡️ I think that my work at Verra has the most impact in the following three ways: First, we analyze data about our project review processes to make them more efficient; we identify bottlenecks and find ways to optimize processes. Second, we assure operational excellence by ensuring the right specialists handle each project. This enables us to complete project reviews faster. Third, our dedicated stakeholder engagement team is enhancing communication with our project proponents to provide them with support, making Verra more responsive and approachable. These are three vital areas where my team contributes to Verra's mission. ❓What's your favorite activity outside of work? ➡️ Outside of work, I find joy in several activities. I find that playing guitar and cooking are wonderful escapes from a day full of reading and analysis – these activities are much more of a manual nature than the ones I do for my job. As a soccer enthusiast, I'm always up for a chat about this sport, no matter the league. But my favorite getaway is the beach, whether in my home country or abroad. There, I feel I can really disconnect from everyday life by immersing myself in a different – and beautiful – landscape and atmosphere.
