Standards for a Sustainable Future

About us

Verra works to provide standards for a sustainable future that address pressing environmental and sustainable development issues. Through robust standards, we help accurately quantify benefits and drive investment in responsible, high-performing projects and programs. We work closely with partners in civil society, governments and the private sector to develop novel frameworks and enable results on the ground. Our flagship standard, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, is the longstanding leading standard in the voluntary carbon market. Since our start in 2009, Verra has expanded our work into new arenas based on increasing demand for social and environmental standards. Today, a growing staff with operatives around the world manage our standards and programs, including the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standard, the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard and the Landscape Standard. We consistently work with our partners to ensure that our existing and new requirements reflect the most current knowledge and global best practice. We are steadily expanding the scope of Verra to respond to the need for new, forward-thinking standards, with a focus on market-based, workable solutions to thorny social and environmental challenges. Verra was originally founded by a collection of business and environmental leaders who saw a need for greater quality assurance in voluntary carbon markets. Our founding partners - The Climate Group, International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and The World Economic Forum - convened a team of global carbon market experts to draft the first Verified Carbon Standard requirements. World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) joined the effort soon after.

At today's #ClimateWeekNYC event "Towards a Just Transition: The Integrity Dialogue in Voluntary Carbon Markets" (also part of IETA's #NorthAmericaClimateSummit), speakers discussed if new market initiatives and guidance, including by the US government, will effectively strengthen integrity at all levels -- at the environmental, but also at the economic and social level. Citing the strong interest in Verra's new Scope 3 Standard Program -- as evidenced by a well-attended event the day before -- Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos said, "Corporates are looking for how do we do this in a way that is high-integrity, quality, gives certainty around Scope 3 emissions ... So we are working on developing a Scope 3 Program ... That is crucial for the market. ... What we are doing is provide an ecosystem that will show what the data is saying, but also traceability." #Verra #StandardsMatter #ClimateAction #NACS2024

Today at #ClimateWeekNYC, Verra and SustainCERT signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to accelerate credible corporate Scope 3 action. Reducing Scope 3 emissions, which often represent the majority of a company’s emissions, is critical. However, key challenges prevent corporates from taking action at scale. These challenges include a lack of clarity around the regulatory landscape and limited commercial incentives to invest in value chain decarbonization. Under the MOU, the partners will collaborate to overcome barriers to scale credible corporate Scope 3 action. Specifically, Verra and SustainCERT aim to collaborate on the following: 💡 Standardizing terminology and definitions in the space and providing clarity for corporates to take action ✅ Working on communications to build momentum and trust for credible Scope 3 climate action ➡️ Creating an interface between Verra’s Registry and SustainCERT’s VIVID Platform and unlocking inventory claims in line with international standards (For more information, please see the link in the comments.) The new collaboration was announced at today's #CWNYC2024 event "The Future of Scope 3: The Role of Value Chain Interventions and EACs with Upcoming Standards and Regulatory Changes", hosted by the Value Chain Initiative. Every seat was taken and the standing room was full, too -- signaling the tremendous interest in credible corporate Scope 3 action. "Every single panel this week talked about collaboration," said Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos. "And today, we are finalizing an MOU with SustainCERT. The collaboration will connect Verra's Scope 3 Standard Program with SustainCERT's auditing capabilities and work on enabling companies to credibly report, track, and co-claim impact of interventions." "Our goal really is to scale, we want to scale this market and advance climate action." #Verra #StandardsMatter #ClimateAction #Scope3 #ESG #SupplyChain #ClimateWeekNYC2024

💡At #ClimateWeekNYC, speakers at S&P Global's event "Cross-Market Collaboration: Demonstrating the Value of the Voluntary Carbon Market in Delivering Lasting Climate Action" explored timely topics related to the voluntary carbon market (VCM) discussed how collaboration in the voluntary carbon market (VCM) can bring about meaningful change, strengthen the market, and promote solutions that are innovative, foster trust, and result in impactful climate action. 🎤 When asked where she sees collaboration in the VCM having worked positively, Mandy Rambharos, Verra CEO said, "To have some sort of guardrails, some sort of framework around how the VCM works is very good progress. ... The coming together, the collaboration under the umbrella, for example, of the ICVCM and VCMI is a good, positive move. ... We all have agreements on things like sustainable development goals, the social impacts, the co-benefits, the safeguards -- we see some coalescing around that." 🎤 ➡️ This event was part of IETA's North America Climate Summit (#NACS2024). A recording of the event will be available one to three weeks after the summit on IETA’s YouTube channel (link in the comments). #Verra #StandardsMatter #ClimateAction #CarbonMarets

🎙️Live from GenZero's #ClimateWeekNYC event "The Future of Carbon Markets in a Bifurcated World!" Speakers are discussing how we can make sure that carbon markets continue to play an effective role in mitigating climate change amidst political complexities. 🎤 Mandy Rambharos, CEO at Verra, says, "Investors want certainty, and in a bifurcated world, they face more uncertainty. We have this disparate approach, but we do see standards working together with [other] bodies; we do see [conversation about] US regulation. This work must be globally relevant, but locally anchored, especially in the Global South." #Verra #StandardsMatter #CarbonMarkets #ClimateAction #ClimateWeekNYC2024

“In the global battle against climate change, we are equipped with numerous tools, but none offer the immediacy and broad impact of the VCM,” writes Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos in Quantum Commodity Intelligence. Mandy's article responds to a recent Washington Post opinion piece claiming that a majority of carbon credits do not represent valid emission reductions. She reminds us that we need to tell the whole story of the voluntary carbon market (VCM) if we want to be successful in our collective effort to reach a sustainable, climate-resilient future. To tell the whole story, we also need to share where we see the credibility of the VCM manifest, which is the result of hard work, constant vigilance, and ongoing self-reflection and improvement. In her piece, Mandy also explores the VCM’s key strengths, which include the following: 💡 Core Values: Our shared mission depends on strengthening the social and environmental marketplace through enhanced credibility, adaptability, integrity, and transparency. 💡 Maximizing Impact: The VCM enables companies and stakeholders who are already committed to addressing the climate crisis to do even more. 💡 Global Benefits: Carbon credits are a vital tool for securing finance and supporting diverse projects worldwide. Mandy also shares her hopes for the VCM's collaborative future: “I am committed to engaging in open dialogue with all stakeholders, fostering constant engagement, co-creating solutions, and advancing the credibility of the carbon market through continuous improvement. Clearly "What Will It Take for the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) to Thrive?" is on everybody's mind! 💡Here are a few remarks from the event: 🎙️ "Why the VCM? Not because we want to generate revenue from carbon credits... We need to remember the purpose ... and that is to address climate change, .. to address mitigation and emission reductions in the most cost-effective manner." Mandy Rambharos, Verra CEO 🎙️ "When an airplane takes off, there will be turbulence, but the US Treasury is here to help buyers and sellers get what they need." Dini Ajmani, deputy assistant secretary, United States Treasury Thank you to everyone who joined us. We look forward to defining the future of the VCM together! #Verra #StandardsMatter #ClimateAction #CarbonMarkets
