VELCO's vision is to create a sustainable Vermont through our people, assets, relationships and operating model.
About us
VELCO is Vermont’s statewide electric transmission provider whose sights are set on creating a sustainable Vermont through our people, assets, relationships and operating model. Formed in 1956 when local Vermont utilities established the nation’s first “transmission only” company to access clean hydro power from New York, VELCO remains unique in two important ways: 1. Our ownership comprises the state’s 17 distribution utilities and a public benefits corporation; and, 2. our for-profit status is structured to return cooperative-like value to our owners, their customers, and every Vermonter. VELCO’s system now includes: 740 miles of transmission lines; 55 substations, switching stations and terminal facilities; 13,000 acres of rights-of-way; a statewide emergency service radio system; and, a 1,600-mile fiber optic network that monitors and controls the electric system and helps to deliver broadband services to Vermonters. Headquartered in Rutland, Vermont, VELCO employees strive to give Vermont’s utilities and their customers a reliable high-voltage grid, a strong unified voice on regional energy issues, and continued access to safe, reliable, cost-effective electricity.

VELCO Annual Safety Summit 2024 – Yesterday's event in Killington was a tremendous success, marking our largest turnout yet for this highly anticipated and important gathering. The summit brought together a diverse group of participants, including contractors from various fields such as line work, substations, telecommunications, vegetation management, drilling, and access crews, along with VELCO team members and guest speakers. This variety made for a well-rounded and enriching experience. This summit is just one of the many ways VELCO strives to align our safety culture with the broader electric utility community across Vermont. We extend our appreciation to all attendees for their active participation and engagement. A special shout out to the Safety Summit planning team for orchestrating such a fantastic event! Thank you for all your hard work.

Daniel Kopin, VELCO's Manager of Innovation spent the week in Seattle at the IEEE Power & Energy Society's General Meeting. Dan shared, "We are grateful for our use-inspired research partnership with Mads Rønne Almassalkhi, Amritanshu Pandey, and Samuel Chevalier at UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences to help ensure a more resilient, affordable, and sustainable transmission system!"
Professor | Entrepreneur | Scientist | Enabling a clean energy future with flexible demand, batteries, and DERs. Dual Danish and American citizen.
We came, we saw, we inverDER’ed! Half of Next-gen Energy Team of Vermont (NEST-VT) met up with alumni (Adil and Nawaf) and Vermont energy afficionados (EnergyHub and Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO)) and together we invaded the shores of Seattle this week at the IEEE Power & Energy Society’s General Meeting to share our work and meet up with new and old colleagues. So many meetings and sessions. Great weather! Last day tomorrow NEST-VT Emeritus Dr. Paul Hines drops the mic on DERs! Be there: 10am, room 441 for the 411 😉 CC: Amritanshu Pandey, Daniel Kopin

This morning, our AGILE (Advancing Grid Intelligence through Learning Experiences) interns visited our New Haven substation and the newly constructed backup operations and control center facility. A big thank you to Andrew Boyle and Brett Wilhelm for being the best tour guides for the group. It's hard to believe we're already over halfway through our summer AGILE program with these talented students. #internshipprogram #utilityinternships #learningexperiences

As more customer-owned solar & other distributed energy sources are added to the grid, changes to distribution & transmission grid operations are required to maintain high quality power. 💡 In our latest blog, OE's Director of Grid Controls Sandra Jenkins discusses how Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are leading the charge with two OE-funded multi-year projects that aim to improve emergency operations & power quality & stability: https://bit.ly/4bUVhYB
