James Madison University students are creating incredible things using locally sourced urban wood. DOF Forest Utilization & Marketing Specialist Joe Lehnen provides technical assistance and support to JMU's Urban Wood Program.
Last week #forestproud friend Joe Lehnen visited Duke Hall on the James Madison University campus to view the progress of the kayak construction class. In this 4-week class taught by Professor Kevin Phaup and known as “Topics in Industrial Design- Skin on Frame Kayaks” the students learn how to properly mill, evaluate, steam, and construct a wooden frame kayak which will be their’s to take home at the end of the session. The bottom ribs are white oak, the long side rails are pine, and the top rib framing is eastern red cedar - all sourced from local urban/community trees and storing carbon in every wood fiber. That's #forestproud. -- #jmu #jmu_id #urbanforestry #urbanwood #harrisonburgva #forestryva #woodisgood #urbanwoodmovement #urbanforestry

PRSA Richmond Chapter recently honored DOF with a Commonwealth Award of Merit for agency communications efforts during last fall's severe wildfire season. Our work to share the stories of our wildland firefighters resulted in national media coverage and exceptional social media reach. Virginians rely on DOF to provide crucial wildfire updates and receiving this award goes a long way in letting us know we're succeeding! Well done, team!
