“I wanted to extend my sincerest and most profound gratitude to our anesthesiology and endoscopy teams for saving my mother’s life” — Karen Rheuban, MD, co-founder and director of the Karen S. Rheuban Center for Telehealth at UVA Health. In June, Dr. Rheuban’s mother, Ruth Schulder, experienced major bleeding from a lesion in her small intestine. Our anesthesia and endoscopy teams, including anesthesiologist Geir Ivar Elgjo, MD, and Vanessa Shami, MD, section chief of interventional gastroenterology, acted quickly. Dr. Shami’s team used a scope to tie off the bleeding lesion without having to perform surgery. “Mom extubated quickly and was immediately better and didn’t even miss her dinner,” Dr. Rheuban says. “Every day, we perform exceptional care. For me, as a faculty physician family member, it was nothing short of miraculous to witness.”

"Growth mindset" — the idea that failure is an opportunity to learn — can have significant downsides when its principles are misapplied, according to a new paper from medical educators. In a new Academic Medicine Journal article, UVA School of Medicine’s Milad Memari, MD, and collaborators describe how growth mindset has taken off in medical education in recent years, while also cautioning that this implementation is “essential but complicated.”

Net-like structures surrounding some neurons in the brain may be the key for better understanding and treating Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders, new UVA School of Medicine research suggests. “It is remarkable that over a century after these structures were first discovered, we are finally uncovering how important they are for normal brain function,” said researcher Harald Sontheimer, PhD, chair of UVA’s Department of Neuroscience.
