About us
The Department of Defense (DoD) activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense (SECDEF), to plan for and conduct special operations.

We recognize the service and sacrifice of our military and their families, and we dedicate resources, services, policies and programs to support the 2 million uniformed service members and their 2.6 million family members across the globe. That’s why, under President Biden’s 2025 budget request for the DoD, we asked for a 4.5% military pay raise, more funding for military family support programs -- including childcare and commissary benefits -- and investments to improve our facilities worldwide. Military service offers incredible opportunities -- and generous benefits. Watch Secretary Austin’s message to learn how the DoD is working to take care of our men and women in uniform, and their families. FOR MORE: https://lnkd.in/dyv7kEgd

U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Steven G. Edwards, the outgoing Special Operations Command Europe commanding general, transferred command to U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Joseph G. Lock during a ceremony at Patch Barracks, July 15. U.S. Army Gen. Christopher Cavoli, commander of U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, presided over the ceremony and spoke of the mission entrusted to Lock: “You’re inheriting a command that is located at the forefront of our nation’s mission. There just couldn’t be a more important time. The events of the past two years have jolted us awake. The war in Ukraine has served as a terrible reminder of the large-scale wars throughout history and a reminder that they can occur again today.” Edwards took command of #SOCEUR in 2022. “Under the dedicated and reliable leadership of Brigadier General Lock, SOCEUR will continue to prosper,” said Edwards. “With over 25 years spent in the special operations community, his expertise, ethics, and leadership is key for the future success of SOCEUR’s efforts in supporting higher headquarters’ priorities. I have no doubt that he will excel in his new role as SOCEUR commander.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eUSe7zeW
