About us
The Department of Defense activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. The DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense, to plan for and conduct special operations.

“Major General Shachnow is the reason I became a Green Beret. I was his aide at a pivotal time in my Army career, and he taught me so much about his commitment to our nation and taking care of people," said US Army Gen. Bryan Fenton, commander of U.S. Special Operations Command. The U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School unveiled a new lane this summer in honor of Maj. Gen. Sydney Shachnow’s legacy. Thousands of footsteps cross Shachnow Lane, in the very heart of the campus, each day as special operations students head to class at the #ARSOF training facilities on Fort Liberty, North Carolina. “We celebrate the legacy of Major General Sydney Shachnow, whose influence remains critical in everything we do here at the Special Warfare Center and School and across the Army SOF community,” said Maj. Gen. Jason C. Slider, the Army #SWCS commanding general. Shachnow was born in Lithuania in 1934, during the turbulent years leading to the breakout of World War II. He survived three years in a concentration camp during the Holocaust as a child. After he was liberated, he immigrated to the United States in 1950. He found his calling in the U.S. Army and as a Special Forces Soldier. He enlisted in the military in 1955 and served for more than 39 years, including 32 in the #SpecialForces community. ♠️ #SOFinthePacific Civil Affairs teamed up with more than 40 participants from Vietnam, Australia and the U.S. to participate in a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief workshop, collaborating with each other to share best practices and #StrengthenRelationships to manage non-traditional threats. “The exchange provided training opportunities to build upon an understanding of how our partners respond to complex conditions, and where we could potentially enhance those capabilities,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Griffin Smith, the team medic for SOCPAC Civil Affairs. “There were a lot of similarities, which helped highlight our ability to work together in the future.” This important collaboration took place as part of #PacificPartnership24 and #PacificAngel, two vital initiatives that bring host and partner nations together to enhance regional disaster response, strengthen security, and foster lasting friendships across a #FreeAndOpenIndoPacific. Operators from the Royal Netherlands Army's Korps Commandotroepen (KCT) and 12th Infantry Battalion (Air Assault) participate in simulated insertion and extraction operations during advanced riverine training at the Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School (NAVSCIATTS) located at the John C. Stennis Space Center in South Mississippi. This iteration of advanced training marks a 10-year relationship between the KCT and NAVSCIATTS, further enhancing U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command's (NSW) maritime SOF capability to enable Joint Force lethality and survivability inside denied and contested areas. NAVSCIATTS, operating under NSW, is a security cooperation training command supporting geographic combatant commands' theater security cooperation priorities. To date, almost 14,000 international security force professionals from 129 allies and partners have trained with this historic command. (U.S. Navy photo by Angela K. 🌍 U.S. Navy SEALs and SWCC recently conducted joint maritime training with Romanian Naval Special Ops in the Black Sea. The drills included complex maritime operations, firing while navigating, shallow water patrols, and coordinated assaults on simulated enemy positions, all aimed at enhancing interoperability and readiness for real-world scenarios. This event underscores the strength and unity of NATO forces and aligns with the U.S. National Defense #Strategy focused on #peace and stability in Europe.🌊 “Training with our Romanian counterparts not only enhances our tactical capabilities but also strengthens the strategic bonds of friendship and trust that are essential for effective Allied operations,” said Navy Capt. V. Scott King, commodore of Naval Special Warfare Group TWO. NSW is the nation’s elite maritime special operations force, uniquely positioned to extend the Fleet’s reach and gain and maintain access for the Joint Force in competition and conflict. 💪 To read entire story and view more pictures visit: https://lnkd.in/gQ5ddQfA #NSW #USSOCOM #Romania #Allies #NavySEALs #NavySWCC #Partnership #NATO Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School (NAVSCIATTS)
