Managing Director - India and Regional Energy Consulting Practice Lead - South Asia at Tetra Tech | Energy Transition| Investments, Institutions and Governance
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can offer multiple benefits and ancillary services which can be stacked to derive value for distribution utilities – benefits from ramping support, frequency regulation support, tertiary reserves, energy arbitrage opportunities, minimizing RE curtailment, capex deferrals, etc. However, not all these benefits can be “monetized” under the current regulatory regime in India. Innovations (both in technology and financing), a supportive policy ecosystem and a clear investment recovery approach needs to drive BESS growth in the distribution sector. It was an interesting round table discussion organized by the USIBC - US India Business Council with a visiting delegation from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Electricity and Office of International Affairs leadership joined by senior members of the energy teams from the U.S. Embassy India and other stakeholders. USIBC Energy, Environment, and Infrastructure Committee hosted a discussion on “Strategic Clean Energy and Battery Technologies” with a visiting delegation from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Electricity and Office of International Affairs leadership. We were delighted to host Mohamed Kamaludeen, PhD of Energy Storage Validation and Elena Thomas-Kerr, Senior Advisor and India Lead, Office of Asian Affairs, visiting storage experts and senior members of the energy teams from the U.S. Embassy India . The interactive discussion brought together representatives from storage technologies and BESS, solar and wind industry, critical minerals, legal and policy leaders, utility planners, electric vehicle and charging infrastructure and manufacturing leaders to have a holistic discussion on storage RD&D, long-term reliability, integration with new technologies, grid flexibility and cross-learnings between the United State and India on supporting integration of renewables. We recognize the critical role played by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), which is the Secretariat of the U.S.-India Energy Storage Taskforce and is chaired by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Actively Hiring || Founder @E-Fill Electric || Passionate Innovator || EV Charging Infra || E-Mobility || Empowering the EV Ecosystem @E-Fill
I had the privilege of joining the recent Roundtable discussion on "Strategic Clean Energy and Battery Technologies" with a visiting delegation from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Office of Electricity and Office of International Affairs leadership joined by senior members of the energy teams from the U.S. Embassy India . This off-the-record roundtable conversation provided an invaluable opportunity to engage with key leaders from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of International Affairs and Office of Electricity Mohamed Kamaludeen, PhD of Energy Storage Validation and Elena Thomas-Kerr, Senior Advisor and India Lead, Office of Asian Affairs. Based on our experince in India (E-Fill Electric) & US maket (E-Fill Electric LLC) we could share our perspective on the importance of developing robust EV charging infrastructure in both the contries & how we need comprehensive support in several areas to uplift the number of charging stations across U.S : - Policy and Funding: Increased government funding and clear policies to encourage private investment. - Innovation and Technology: Support for research and development in fast-charging technologies and energy-efficient systems. - Public-Private Partnerships: Collaboration between government, industry, and academia to accelerate infrastructure rollout. Furthermore, I believe India can gain valuable insights from the U.S. experience in the charging and energy storage sector and Key learnings from the discussion includes : - Integrated Approach: Developing a cohesive strategy that combines infrastructure development with renewable energy sources. - Data Accessibility: Implementing tools like hosting capacity maps in the U.S. to better understand spare power load and optimize infrastructure placement. - Regulatory Framework: Establishing a strong regulatory framework to support the growth and sustainability of EV infrastructure. Special thanks to Sidhanta Mehra and Alexander Slater from USIBC - US India Business Council for the invite and for facilitating such a productive discussion. It was great to connect with industry leaders and experts like Anuja Tiwari , Abhishek Jain , Nyla Khan, Pradeep Karuturi and Ramakrishna Sataluri . This roundtable underscored the importance of international cooperation in advancing clean energy technologies. I look forward to seeing the positive impact of these discussions on both U.S. and Indian energy landscapes. #CleanEnergy #EVCharging #SustainableFuture #USIndiaRelations #EnergyStorage E-Fill Electric E-Fill Electric LLC
