The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that respirators be fit-tested to the wearer’s face to achieve a tight seal to the face. Facial hair may interfere with this tight seal. For this reason, OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard 29 CFR 1910.134(g)(1)(i)(A) currently prohibits employees from wearing respirators with tight-fitting facepieces if there is any hair growth between the skin and facepiece sealing surface. Learn about the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) project to determine how well respirators provide protection to workers with facial hair when using an under-respirator cover (beard band).

About us
Welcome to the official LinkedIn page of the U.S. Fire Administration! As an entity of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, the mission of the U.S. Fire Administration is to provide national leadership to foster a solid foundation for our fire and emergency services stakeholders in prevention, preparedness and response. America’s fire losses today represent a dramatic improvement from more than 40 years ago. In 1971, our nation lost more than 12,000 residents and 250 firefighters to fire. Acting to stop these tragic losses, Congress passed the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act in 1974. It created the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Fire Academy (NFA). Since that time, through data collection, public education, research and training efforts, USFA has helped to reduce fire deaths and make our communities and residents safer.

Each September, we celebrate #NationalPreparednessMonth. Our 2023 National Household Survey showed that 65% of AANHPI individuals across the nation do not believe that taking a step to prepare will make a difference. Preparing for emergencies on blue sky days can make all the difference when disaster strikes. Let's #StartAConversation, close the preparedness gap, & address barriers across our communities. #NPM2024
