Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery recently welcomed Kenneth C. Thayer, a 99-year-old World War II veteran and decorated member of the 30th Infantry Division. Kenneth fought with unwavering bravery, from the D-Day landings in Normandy to the final victory in May 1945. His unit played a crucial role in some of the fiercest battles on the Western Front, contributing significantly to the Allied triumph. He was accompanied by Lt. Gen. Morrison and Col. Hollenack from the North Carolina Army National Guard, and a group of 17 others, further adding to the significance of this remarkable occasion. Together, they visited three specific graves and explored the cemetery grounds. "Nearly eight decades after the war, Kenneth returned to our cemetery, bringing with him a lifetime of wisdom and countless stories of courage, sacrifice, and brotherhood," shared Henri Chapelle American Cemetery Superintendent Carlos Gavilanes. "His presence offered a rare opportunity for younger generations to hear firsthand accounts of the war and reflect on the heroism that defined his generation." Thayer has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Bronze Star. His visit served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by so many, whose memories are forever honored here at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery. At the end of his visit, Thayer graciously presented the ABMC with a copy of the book “Forever Old Hickory WWII Veterans,” further commemorating his service's enduring legacy. When asked what message he would like to share with those visiting the cemetery, Thayer humbly replied, "This is the price of freedom."

Today marks the anniversary of the beginning of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in World War I. These quotes are from the Battlefield Experience film designed for the visitor center at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. The movie presents immersive World War I movie scenes that include the realities of trench warfare, the brutality of hand-to-hand combat, the effects of poison gas, the limited availability of medical care, and the celebration of the Armistice. Watch it on YouTube 🔍 @usabmc.
