🌾 What are perennial grains? 🌾 Perennial grains are long-lived alternatives to major grains like barley, lentils, and sunflower seeds. Examples of new perennial grains include Kernza® in the US and perennial rice in China, with many more crops in development that The Land Institute and partners will release over the next two decades. Perennial grains allow farmers to plant once and harvest a crop for many years without replanting. These crops’ longevity and deep root systems build healthy soil and protect it from erosion, better utilize water, foster biodiversity, remove carbon from the air, and more. As new hardware for agriculture, perennial grains can transform our approach to farming by achieving high-yielding, climate-resilient food crops with robust ecological, economic, and social benefits.

Natural Climate Solutions like reforestation have MANY benefits for communities. Check out this great example from Ohio below 👏 #NaturalClimateSolutions

Conservation Success Story! For the last two years, The Nature Conservancy has been partnering with Cuyahoga Valley National Park, The Conservancy for CVNP, and Sagamore Hills Township to reforest 40 acres along the headwaters of the Cuyahoga River to reduce stormwater runoff and improve habitat. Funded through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Sustain Our Great Lakes program, the project aimed to control invasive species, capture 543,000 gallons of stormwater annually, stabilize soils, filter pollutants and reconnect forest habitat by planting 5,200 trees. This work would not have been possible without the work of thousands of volunteers, who not only planted trees, but also helped with invasive plant management as well as citizen science monitoring of tree mortality, pollinator diversity and bird survey efforts. What we’ve accomplished through this project: 🌲 5,400 trees planted on 40 acres 🌲 555,000 gallons of stormwater storage added 🌲 100 acres of invasive species managed 🌲 2,870 volunteers engaged (1,300 of which were youth) 🌲 9,161 hours of volunteer service contributed Kudos to our partners and volunteers who helped make this work possible! © Rick Santich

Does your home town invest in nature-based solutions like urban tree canopies or composting programs? Detailed highlight notes are now available for EESI's recent briefing, "Cities Leading the Way on Nature-Based Solutions," which explored equitable and community-designed climate solutions from small- and medium-sized cities. Too long; didn't read? You can also save 🔖 and share ↪ these key takeaways: 1. Policies that leverage nature-based solutions (such as green roofs and urban trees) play a key role in combating climate change and fostering resilient urban communities. 2. Nature-based solutions can help address climate change by reducing flood risks, improving water quality, protecting coastal property, restoring and protecting wetlands, stabilizing shorelines, and reducing urban heat. 3. American Forests has developed a tool called the Tree Equity Score that sets a national standard to assess how well the benefits of urban tree canopies reach the people most in need. 4. Many municipalities have limited sustained funding and staff for nature-based solutions. Federal support is critical, especially funding that goes directly from the federal level to a municipality. Inspiring and amazing news! The largest ever ($200 million!!) natural climate solutions grant will support a wide range of conservation, restoration, and improved land management activities across VA, MD, NC, and SC. This funding is made possible through the Inflation Reduction Act and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program.   My takeaways: 1) The inflation reduction act championed by the Biden/Harris administration is going to have a HUGE positive impact for people and the environment for generations to come. 2) Purpose driven coalitions and visionary leadership can deliver BIG WINS at scale. 3) Elections matter. This historic investment was only made possible because of voters electing leaders that were willing to go big. 4) Science-based advocacy, outreach and education from coalitions like US Nature4Climate and others have put #naturalclimatesolutions on the map, front and center where they belong.

📢 Breaking News! TNC is thrilled to announce that we will receive a $200 million grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the next 5 years to advance nature-based solutions and reduce carbon emissions across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina! 🎉 This funding is part of a $421 million grant from the EPA — the largest ever for natural climate solutions! The grant will enable TNC to significantly expand its efforts, improving forest management on over 67,650 acres in the Appalachians, restoring 33,000 acres of peatlands, protecting 10,500 acres of land, and restoring 150 acres of tidal wetlands – helping us to reduce wildfire and flood risks and to achieve our 2030 goals for nature and the environment. TNC Virginia will receive $47.2 million to conserve forests and improve forest management across the Appalachians and Southeastern Virginia, as well as restore tidal wetlands in Eastern Virginia, all of which will involve collaborating across state borders to maximize the climate benefits. We are honored to host Serena McIlwain, Secretary of the Maryland Department of the Environment, for a luncheon on Tuesday, October 8, as a part of the RAE Coastal & Estuarine Summit. Not only is Secretary McIlwain a renowned figure in environmental advocacy, her experience at the forefront of environmental policy provides a rich context for an in-depth discussion on the experiences and contributions of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) within the environmental movement. This event is a unique opportunity to discuss inclusion, access, and diversity in green spaces across our nation so be sure to register and join us to be a part of the conversation working to create a more equitable environmental movement. #RAESummit https://buff.ly/3Q6jvqx
