Our mission is to protect human health and the environment.
About us
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mission is to protect human health and the environment. EPA works to ensure that: - Americans have clean air, land and water; - National efforts to reduce environmental risks are based on the best available scientific information; - Federal laws protecting human health and the environment are administered and enforced fairly, effectively and as Congress intended; - Environmental stewardship is integral to U.S. policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry, and international trade, and these factors are similarly considered in establishing environmental policy; - All parts of society--communities, individuals, businesses, and state, local and tribal governments--have access to accurate information sufficient to effectively participate in managing human health and environmental risks; - Contaminated lands and toxic sites are cleaned up by potentially responsible parties and revitalized; and - Chemicals in the marketplace are reviewed for safety. The agency was founded in 1970 and is headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia with ten additional regional headquarters offices (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle) as well as more than a dozen laboratories, and other regional and programmatic offices.

EPA is proposing to designate acetaldehyde, acrylonitrile, benzenamine, vinyl chloride, and 4,4’-methylene bis(2-chloroaniline) as High-Priority Substances for risk evaluation under TSCA. This is an important step towards studying the safety of these chemicals – all of which are used to make plastic and have been linked to cancer. It's International Day for the Conservation of the #Mangrove Ecosystem. Mangroves play an important role in storing carbon and naturally mitigating #ClimateChange, but human-caused and natural factors affect their growth. #EPAer Chandra Giri analyzed 40 years of land satellite data to observe how mangroves in the contiguous U.S. have changed. Giri's research shows how urbanization, coastal development, sea level rise, and several other factors have affected mangrove growth and migration over the past few decades. 🧪 Read her Science Matters article: https://lnkd.in/ebVmgtZ2

Ensuring the safe use of insecticides is a crucial part of protecting our environment. We have released a draft Insecticide Strategy for public comment - a milestone in our work to adopt early, practical protections for federally endangered and threatened (listed) species. This draft identifies protections that we will consider when registering a new insecticide or reevaluating an existing one. In developing this draft strategy, we’ve identified protections to address potential impacts for more than 850 species listed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Learn more about this draft strategy and how to comment ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gu3ChxPZ #EndangeredSpecies #PublicComment
