🚨 In case you missed it, Nathaniel Fields, CEO of Urban Resource Institute (URI), and Joslyn Carter, LCSW, Agency Administrator of New York City's Department of Homeless Services (DHS), recently appeared on WABC's "Here and Now" with host Sandra Bookman to discuss a groundbreaking initiative: NYC’s first-ever pet-inclusive homeless shelter. This innovative pilot program, inspired by URI’s People and Animals Living Safely (PALS) program, marks a significant step forward in addressing homelessness. The new high-quality, purpose-built shelter provides a safe and supportive environment for both individuals and their pets, ensuring that no family member—human or animal—is left behind. Learn more about how URI and DHS are working together to create compassionate solutions and transform lives. 🐾🏠 #StayTogetherHealTogether #Homelessness #PetInclusive #PALS #NYC #Innovation #Community #SocialImpact

Urban Resource Institute (URI) is excited to share that we have received a $6,500 grant from NEW YORK BAR FOUNDATION to support our Legal Education Advocacy Program (LEAP). Established in 2006, LEAP provides tailored, on-site legal assistance for survivors, covering vital issues such as child custody, support, divorce, and protection orders. By educating survivors about their legal rights and providing immediate access to necessary legal services, LEAP plays a critical role in helping them achieve and maintain independence from their abusers. URI expresses profound concern over the Supreme Court's recent decision in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, which permits the enforcement of "camping ban" laws against unhoused people. Every day our team works with hundreds of families and singles in New York City who have lost their homes due to violence or poverty, many who have been forced to sleep on the streets at some point in their journey. These adults and children are not guilty of any crime! Read our full statement to understand how this decision affects our work and the lives of those we serve. https://bit.ly/4f1bPkn #HousingRights #EndHomelessness #JusticeForAll

Thanks to the generosity of Vodafone Foundation, URI is launching a coding bootcamp for teenage girls in our shelters. This new initiative expands our STEM offerings through our Fab Lab. As the sole provider in NYC for sheltered youth, this initiative introduces girls to new career paths, bridges the digital gap, and prepares them for advanced coding programs. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the William E. Seale Family Foundation and Trudy B. Valentine for their Major Gifts supporting our Economic Empowerment Program. These contributions are essential for continuing to provide our clients with job-readiness services. Together, we are empowering the future. #STEM #FabLab #EconomicEmpowerment #EmpowerHer #DigitalInclusion

After being involved in a dangerous relationship, Brenda had to leave her home and leave behind her beloved pets Rainbow and Kitty. ㅤ “I was sad, 'I mean,' sad, crying, thinking, 'How are my cats?'" Brenda said. ㅤ However, her situation changed when she was admitted to a URI shelter in Brooklyn that protects survivors of domestic violence and also accepts pets. ㅤ Thank you NY1 News Noticias and Yenniffer Martínez for sharing Brenda's story and the lifesaving work of Urban Resource Institute and the People and Animals Living Safely program. ㅤ ## ㅤ Tras verse involucrada en una relación peligrosa, Brenda tuvo que abandonar su hogar y dejar atrás a sus amadas mascotas rainbow y kitty. ㅤ “Yo estaba triste, 'I mean', triste', llorando, pensando ¿cómo están mis gatas?", dijo Brenda. ㅤ Sin embargo, su situación cambió al ser admitida en un albergue en Brooklyn que protege a sobrevivientes de violencia doméstica y, que además, acepta mascotas.
