We're incredibly lucky to have you as a member of our community Katie MacDonald Tailwind and it was a pleasure to host the event at the Urban Future Lab at NYU Tandon School of Engineering! The potential for innovation in climate adaption is huge. Austin Evarts knows something about it since for the first time our Urban Future Prize will feature 5 climate adaption finalists!
Yesterday Tailwind had the pleasure of co-hosting the Extreme Heat & Health Innovation Event with our partners Climate Health Innovation & Learning Lab University of Colorado Climate & Health Program La Isla Network and NYU Tandon Future Labs. This event focused on the #1 weather-related killer and what we can DO about it to save and improve lives. 🌡 We heard from experts on demand for innovation: Kathy Baughman McLeod Jay Lemery Chethan Sarabu, MD @Dr. Arbab Ghosh Monika Serrano and the 1st Chief Heat Officer in the Country Jane Gilbert 🌡 We also heard from solution experts: Vadim Gordin Jason Glaser Matt Anderson Nakita Devlin and Ibbi Almufti The punch line? 📚 Comprehension: If businesses, leaders, and policymakers don't understand how heat impacts human health, we will collectively permit unnecessary deaths and avoidable suffering. 📣 Communication: If that understanding is not communicated properly to people as solutions become available, they simply will not be used. ⚙ Innovation: If innovators can meet demand owners / customers where they ARE on this issue and understand unique contexts and pain points, this is a space ripe for innovation opportunity and business growth. Event volunteers make these conversations possible! Huge thanks to David Babikian Clara Zou Ashwini Ramanathan Alfredo Moreno. Special thanks to Rebecca Birmingham for making this event possible 🙏🏼 Emilie Mazzacurati Brooke Zhang

Lots to reflect on after an action packed week in New York, where Kensa Group took part in Innovate UK's Global Incubator Programme. momentum is increasing in the USA towards decarbonising the built environment, but the nature of the housing stock, climate, and regulatory environment, poses its own unique challenges. A couple of reflections from my trip… 🧊 - Active cooling will become an increasingly important requirement for heat pumps – the UK has been slow on the uptake here, but London summers are getting hotter and hotter. This is non-negotiable for the US market. 🛍️ - Heat pump adoption relies on a big consumer behavioural change – so being able to offer customers a solution that looks and feel like the gas boilers they use today will quicken uptake. National Grid and Eversource Energy are pioneering geothermal networks in the US (akin to the gas grid) that customers can plug their heat pump into when they are ready - just like Kensa’s shared ground array solution. 💲 - Much like the UK, cost is the biggest barrier in the US to low carbon heating adoption, so it is crucial Kensa and the rest of the industry continue innovating to bring costs down. Big thanks to Urban Future Lab and Greentown Labs, for putting together such a comprehensive and engaging set of workshops.

About a year ago, I met Aljoscha Sander and Carolina Gomez Rodriguez at the Offshore Wind Innovation Hub - an accelerator for wind energy startups put together by Equinor, New York City Economic Development Corporation, and Urban Future Lab. Josh came in to the competitive selection pitch event in a high-vis jacket, straight off an offshore wind installation vessel. Ever since, I've been fascinated by Flucto's technologies and their drive to move the world towards a renewable energy future... ...so much so that I joined their team part-time last summer and have been helping them with both business development as well as establishing Flucto in the US. Our stand at WindEnergy Hamburg really showcases the core of this team; a tiki bar to kick it back with a rum&coke and a fully functional demo showcasing our cutting edge technology using a pirate ship. I'm proud to now share this new team I've joined; if you're at Wind Energy Hamburg, please drop by our booth at A3.JIU.161 if you want to meet up! Shout out to the OWIH and Equinor team as well for making this happen: Anna Yum Tone Søndergaard, Julia R. G. Dombroski, PhD, Anthony Cortese, Ana Fisyak, AICP
We're here and ready to go at WindEnergy Hamburg! Our team has been working on our demo and tiki bar, vacation themed booth for the last few months, and are excited to finally share it with everyone! Come by Booth A3.JIU.161 to learn how Flucto's digital platform, sensor technology, and data analytics services can streamline your installation campaign. Or, drop by our Tikibar for a rum&coke or beer after a long day of networking! Whichever the case, you're guaranteed to have a great time here. 🌍 Innovate UK Climatetech Intensive Week at Urban Future Lab Recap 🌍 🌇 Last week, we were incredibly excited to kick off Cohort 5’s journey with us, welcoming them to our NYC office NYU Tandon School of Engineering. The week started with an icebreaker session and customer discovery workshops, where startups defined key assumptions, developed interview scripts, and identified customer segments. Monday’s sessions concluded with valuable mentor breakout sessions led by NYSERDA's Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs), offering tailored feedback to each team. ⚡ On Tuesday, the UK Department of International Trade highlighted support for UK companies expanding in the U.S. market, followed by a critical session with Jonathan Lane from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on federal regulations and opportunities under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). 💡 Wednesday saw Chi Nguyen from NYSERDA dive into New York State’s regulatory landscape and climate fund opportunities, with Nicole Spina from New York City Economic Development Corporation covering local regulations. Later, Professor Minna Logemann from Baruch College led a discussion on U.S. communication styles to help the startups adapt to business norms in America. This was followed by a discussion of the wider research ecosystem at NYU and a tour of the wet lab research facilities at NYU Tandon School of Engineering led by Miguel Modestino, Director of the Sustainable Engineering Initiative at New York University. 🌱 The week wrapped up on Thursday with an insightful session on the DEI landscape for U.S. businesses, led by Adj Marshall M.A. x 2, followed by a recap and next steps with Innovate UK’s Edge Advisors, NYSERDA EIRs, and Ian Fletcher from Innovate UK. 🚀 This intensive week armed the #climatetech startups with vital tools, regulatory insights, and tailored mentorship to help them successfully expand into the U.S. market. 🌟 Huge thanks to all the startups and founders who joined us for the intensive week: Fiona Conor, Scott Conor, and Olivia Hullah from Trust Electric Heating | Rosie Griffiths from Olsights | Nick Tune from Optimise-AI | Alessandro Pastore from Camfridge | Richard Draper from Kensa Group | Emmeline Aves from ReVentas.

🤯 September is usually busy, and this year is no exception! Right before ClimateWeek, the #C2VInitiative kicked off its Year 4 activities with exciting meetings in Houston. 🤝 We brought together the nine #carbontech startups from C2V's Year 4 (meet the startups: https://lnkd.in/eANSqHHF) and thirteen Carbontech Leadership Council member organizations (explore the CLC: https://lnkd.in/eBW6Dt7) to spark meaningful business discussions and launch new partnerships. It was inspiring to see such high levels of engagement and collaboration! 🧪 We also visited Syzygy, which is pioneering a groundbreaking approach to chemical reactions using light—a fantastic example of the challenges and opportunities faced by later-stage companies scaling their solutions. Huge thanks to Suman Khatiwada, PhD, and the Syzygy team for the insightful tour! 🎉 The two-day event concluded with a public kickoff, celebrating and strengthening Houston’s #carbontech ecosystem. 💚 A big shoutout to the entire C2V team and the Houston Greentown team for making this event a success!
