🔥 Year after year, we’re excited to see a strong and renewed pipeline of #carbontech innovations, with 123 applicants to the Year 4 of the #C2VInitiative - across 6 continents and 29 countries! Here are some further insights into our pool of applicants: 🧪 While most applications focus on adding value to carbon by creating physical products that can find a market, we’re also seeing a good portion of applicants proposing innovative ways of capturing CO2 (point source or directly from the air), as well as offering solutions that are sequestering carbon. And sometimes the three all together (looking at you, mineralization 👀). 🎯 Technology Readiness Level is by no means a perfect metric to capture the maturity of a technology innovation, but it is a useful indication that we use to better understand how C2V can best help innovators. Close 90% of applicants are between TRL 4-7, which is our sweet spot ✅ ✍️ We at Urban Future Lab NYU Tandon School of Engineering look forward to reading and evaluating all applications, with our partners Greentown Labs, 10 experts from Fraunhofer USA Inc., and 30 participating reviewers from our of the Carbontech Leadership Council members. 💚🐟🥬 Urban Future Lab NYU Tandon School of Engineering #Team Day at #NewYorkCity's First Outdoor #Aquaponics #Farm 🌱 Yesterday, we dove into the the fascinating world of #urban #agriculture by going on an #educational #tour of Oko Farms, which made for the perfect bonding experience for us climate nerds! Thank you to our #community manager Erin Wiens for organizing - it was incredibly inspiring to see creative, resilient, and accessible #climatetech deployed locally. 🧑🌾 Oko Farms’ mission is to promote aquaponics as an #ecological #farming method that mitigates the impact of climate change and increases food security for urban residents. We've been actively engaging in various events, bringing innovation and collaboration to the forefront. 🔋 Reuters Global Energy Transition Conference 2024 We joined industry leaders to glean insights into the future of energy transition. From dynamic panels to thought-provoking discussions, the #conference explored the latest advancements in the #energy sector. UFL joined the leadership forum alongside 250 energy, finance, corporate, and #government executives. Thank you to Owen Rolt for having us! 🍽️ Portfolio Dinner with Wells Fargo In partnership with Wells Fargo, we curated a workshop on IRA Subsidies - Tax Credits and GGRF in Hudson Yards for our portfolio companies. Jeffrey Schub, Head of Wells Fargo Enterprise Sustainability, provided crucial updates on the Inflation Reduction Act. We had another successful application cycle for our 8th annual Urban Future Prize Competition. It is our goal every year to find the most promising solutions to climate change, give away non-dilutive funding to the winners, and invite these innovative companies into our ACRE Incubator. Here are some #insights from our applications this year: 🚀 We had a record number of applicants! 317 market-ready #climatetech companies applied, 42% more than last year. 🌊 New this year, we are running a prize track focused on climate adaptation, our Future Resilience Prize. We are seeing exciting innovations across water scarcity, climate insurance, resilience based workforce development, seawalls, and more. 💫 56% of our applications were from women-led startups, and 24% of our applications were from BIPOC-led startups. This is an improvement for us from previous years, and a trend in the right direction for our efforts to reach underrepresented groups in climatetech. 🌎 Last but not least, our applications by climate sector are below (and attached). This year we saw continued growth across Adaptation, Circular Economy, and Electricity sectors from previous years. 18% - Adaptation 18% - Buildings 17% - Circular Economy 14% - Electricity 10% - Transportation 8% - Manufacturing 8% - Climate Finance 5% - Agriculture 3% - Other Thank you so much to our sponsors, MUFG and The New York Community Trust, and to NYU Tandon School of Engineering for allowing us to continue this meaningful work. 🏃💨 ACCELERATOR WORKSHOP & HAPPY HOUR RECAP! 💚🌬️ What an exciting start to our 2024 Accelerator Program! This week, our diverse and dynamic cohort gathered in NYC to kick off the first of three intensive workshops. The goal? To immerse them in the New York offshore wind landscape, introducing them to key industry players driving innovation and development 🚀 We extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to this workshop's success. Your dedication is driving the future of offshore wind innovation! 🌟 📅 DAY 1: -The cohort engaged in peer-to-peer learning through "Cohort Connections," discussing company origins and goals. -Ashley Elizabeth Ball, Harriet Green and Michael Taylor from Equinor provided a comprehensive overview of Equinor and the Empire Project, setting the stage for the cohort’s involvement in New York’s offshore wind landscape. Ulrik Soderstrom from Benchmark Labs Inc. shared valuable lessons learned from the 2023 Cohort.  - Expert session on innovation in offshore wind, delivered by Nick Z. from Xodus.  - A gourmet dinner 🍽️ in Industry City, where the cohort networked and bonded! 🤝   📅DAY 2 : -A session on development plans and mentorship best practices, led by Anthony Cortese and Julia R. G. Dombroski, PhD. 🗒️ -Cohort members met with their Equinor mentors to discuss their development plans, receiving personalized feedback. 🔍 -Comprehensive session on CEN EIR goals and scope of work, facilitated by CEN EIR Mentors and Emma Spector from Columbia Technology Ventures. 📅 DAY 3  -An expert session on "101 Offshore Wind in the USA" presented by Lyndie Hice-Dunton from National Offshore Wind Research & Development Consortium and our Director, Tone Søndergaard, Urban Future Lab.  -A Hub Community Expert Session on inclusive innovation approaches and federal grant opportunities, led by Maya Whalen-Kipp from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). -An expert session on New York's OSW landscape, presented by Sherryll Huber and Pauline Huet Le Bertre from NYSERDA. -Meet-and-greet with #EmpireWind Tier 1 suppliers: Skanska: Val Tzvetkov, Nexans: Okera Bullen, GE Vernova (GE Grid Solutions): Viswanath Kunapuli, Vestas: Trina Whiteside, Heerema Marine Contractors: Patrick Naylon, COWI: Dylan Chen, P.E., PMP, ENV SP. 🏙️ To top it off, the cohort enjoyed an evening on the historic Wavertree ship for our Seaside Summer Reception, continuing their networking! 📅 DAY 4: -Learning session on fundraising and VC decisions with Jake Russell from Propeller. -Sam Jung from New York City Economic Development Corporation then led an expert session on the city's resources and opportunities. -The cohort visited the Brooklyn Army Terminal, to learn about the innovative developments taking place at BAT! 🌍 Here’s to many more exciting sessions ahead! On Thursday June 27th, the Offshore Wind Innovation Hub hosted a Seaside Summer Reception in collaboration with the Urban Future Lab, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, South Street Seaport Museum and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in New York. This reception was held on the historic Wavertree ship and featured inspiring words from Captain Jonathan Boulware, President and CEO of the South Street Seaport Museum; Ahmed Dadou, Consul General of The Consulate General of The Kingdom of the Netherlands in New York; and Linda Ng Boyle, Professor of Civil & Urban Engineering and Vice Dean for Research at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Professor Linda Ng Boyle, energized the crowd with her enthusiasm for the 2024 cohort (Boxkite, Claviate, Indeximate, Pliant Energy Systems Inc, Sensatek Propulsion Technology, Inc, Triton Anchor). Fresh out of our in-hub workshops, the cohort brought their passion and innovative spirit to the evening, engaging with attendees and sharing their groundbreaking ideas. Boyle also highlighted that this year marks NYU Tandon School of Engineering's 170th anniversary, celebrating the school’s long standing role in driving innovation and addressing today's most pressing challenges. #NYUTandonMade

The Offshore Wind Innovation Hub announced its selection of the 2024 companies that will receive support to further develop their ideas and advance offshore wind’s potential in New York. Six companies were selected from a pool of 78 applicants based on the novelty of their solutions that will help propel the United States to the forefront of offshore wind technology. The 2024 Offshore Wind Innovation Hub Accelerator Cohort: —Boxkite Software (Bristol, UK) – Bankable-level accuracy energy yield assessments in minutes to assess site feasibility and design —Claviate (Aarhus, DK) – Visual data platform enabled by AI cameras for transparency and process optimization of construction management —Indeximate (Hinckley, UK) – Fibre optic sensing for predictive maintenance of subsea power cables by remotely profiling integrity and condition —Pliant Energy Systems Inc Systems (Brooklyn, US) – Autonomous underwater vehicle with robotic propulsion technology enabling new seafloor surveying capabilities —Sensatek Propulsion Technology, Inc (Daytona Beach, US) – Structural health monitoring of turbine blades by using video images where every pixel is a vibration sensor —Triton Anchor (Boston, US) – Low cost, silently installed, modular foundation installation system allowing for any mooring configuration Launched in January 2023, the Offshore Wind Innovation Hub is led by Equinor in collaboration with Urban Future Lab at NYU Tandon, and National Offshore Wind Research & Development Consortium (NOWRDC) supported by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC).
