About us

We are Urban Arena. A collective of landscape architects, architects and planners who use unconventional ideas and our technical know-how to accomplish any project at any complexity or scale. NO IDEA IS A BAD IDEA. A ground-breaking collaborative specifically designed to utilize the knowledge of the many. A company where ideas come to built reality, where there is no other limit than our own imagination. Designed to be better than the average firm, we have seamlessly combined disciplines into a cohesive singularity. Leveraging the combined knowledge of our architecture, landscape architecture and planning wings, we can bring a comprehensive design to the table in record time with extraordinary results. Urban Arena (UA) was established in 1996 by Michael Schrock and in 1997, Keith Mittemeyer joined the team partnering with Michael. Founded originally with a focus on landscape architecture and planning, Urban Arena quickly expanded to include architecture to provide clients with a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary service. Urban Arena was formed in Southern California, with offices in Orange County, San Diego, and Oakland. Our projects range from urban villages, retail and entertainment centers, model homes, master-planned residential communities, community parks, high-density housing, and sports complexes.

ASLA San Diego Chapter honored Urban Arena with a multifamily merit award for our work on The Townsend.  The Townsend is a 5.13 acre Mixed-Use community in Mission Valley. This project, once a Lincoln dealership, fosters community and promotes sustainable transit with activated courtyards, live-work units adjacent retail, a public “Grandstand” connecting street level to the site, and an MTS bus stop. The industrial history and the challenge of grading the site up in elevation due to seasonal flooding led our team to the concepts of extrusion and reconstruction through form. A variety of paving materials and wall forms are used throughout the site, emphasizing that materials and forms create, connect, and interrupt space. The site layout was coordinated to utilize the California sun with three southwest-facing courtyards: “Sit” Dog Park, Terrace, and Aqua Deck. Terraced steps and seat walls along the corner of Camino De La Reina form stoops for people to activate and invite others up into the site. Thank you to our client The Dinerstein Companies for giving us the opportunity to work on such a fun infill project. Thank you to TCA Architects, Inc. for the fantastic site coordination.

Urban Arena has won two ASLA merit awards for our work on 525 Olive. 525 Olive is a 20-story mixed-use apartment tower located adjacent to Balboa Park in Banker’s Hill and is adjoined on the site by the protected and enhanced St Paul’s Cathedral. This project blends the historic quality with modern elegance. Meticulous coordination between disciplines and custom crafted details marry the designs of the two structures. The landscape along the public ground-level begins at the Courtyard entry. The gate and the scaled replica of the Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth align on the entry axis and reflect the historic quality of the site. The 20th level pool deck takes advantage of the site’s location with 180-degree bay views. The paving materials and the barbecue counter are synchronized with the interiors, connecting the interior sky lounge and the outdoor deck. The firepit, planting, and pool handrails are refined to showcase the prominent arch design. Thank you to our client Greystar for giving us the opportunity to work on such a significant project in San Diego. A huge thank you to our collaborators on this project: Architecture: JWDA Architects  Interior Design: Jules Wilson Design Studio   Furnishings: Stur Design Inc, Cooke Furniture, Tournesol Siteworks  Landscape: Urban Arena #sandiegoliving #landscapearchitecture #sandiego #landscapedesign #luxuryapartments #roofdeck #asla

This new neighborhood park in the Wagon Wheel Town Square master-planned development will serve over 1,250 surrounding residents. This 2.3-acre park is open to the public and is located adjacent to Highways 1 and 101, which connect it to the larger Oxnard community. Turf runs, shade sail covered tot lots, a sand volleyball court, gaming areas, and shaded picnic spaces provide outdoor amenities for everyone. The park serves as the community's center hub, providing spill-out and outdoor dining areas for the nearby bowling alley and brewery, as well as access to the adjacent HOA courtyards and pool via a fire lane disguised as a pedestrian promenade.
