We're thrilled to welcome and collaborate with the incomparable Melanie P. on our new blog series: "Roots & Wings" -- bringing you a dose of truth-telling, career navigating tips and resources. What can you expect from our new blog series? "Roots & Wings” is a metaphor that represents both stability (roots) and freedom (wings). It suggests a balanced approach to life and personal growth, where individuals have strong foundations (roots) that provide stability, support, and a sense of belonging, while also having the freedom (wings) to explore, grow, and pursue their aspirations. In the context of this blog -- centering people of color navigating careers, “Roots & Wings” symbolizes embracing #cultural heritage (roots) while striving for personal and professional advancement (wings). 💐We're so grateful for your brilliance and vulnerability, Melanie! The first blog post is coming this week…we can’t wait to share with you! #RootsandWings #Blog #Resources #CareerTips

Our four #values guide our decision-making, our client and candidate relationships, as well as our search process and learning experiences. This month, we'll be sharing what these values mean to us, as well as how they show-up in our daily work. The first value: RADICAL CANDOR 🗣 We value partnerships rooted in curiosity and candor. This looks like saying-the-thing that may go unsaid - so we can get to root causes. Interrupting bias and calling you in to unpack while facilitating a final interview day debrief session with the hiring committee. This also looks like being radically candid with candidates regarding the inner-workings and “unspoken rules” of the role. We believe transparency and our “no sugar coating” approach helps organizations identify an honest match – one who will not only achieve results, but will contribute to the long-term success of the organization. #antioppression #radicalcandor

#MiGente I won’t stand by this hiring practice: "Soft References". What are they? When a candidate is interviewing for a role, and often at the final stage, hiring managers secretly reach out to people who they've worked with (and in their network) to learn more about the candidate, reasons for their "early" departure, etc. I've seen this done multiple times, and it's especially frustrating when it's done to historically marginalized talent. It's shady, bias and often rooted in anti-Blackness, racism (and other -isms), and an unnecessary power flex. This isn’t a “gotcha moment”. Here's why: 🔴 Candidates are promised confidentiality throughout the process. If we reach out to folks who the candidate has not openly expressed that they are interviewing elsewhere, they may experience backlash and/or retaliation. 🔴 Research shows that Black employees are often subjected to racism in the workplace, which result in a backlash in the form of lower performance evaluations and outcomes. 🔴 Research shows that women of color are promoted at a lower rate than their white male counterparts. 🔴 Research shows that Latinas make .54 cents to the dollar of their white male counterparts. It's important that we hold this at the center when discussing someone's experience working with a candidate. Hiring Managers, If after multiple interview rounds and a performance task you still feel the need to reach out to your network to learn more about the candidate, without their consent, ask yourself why. Is there a wondering you still have? What evidence is leading you to be unsure or still question whether this person is the right person for the role? What third perspective are we not seeing here? And if you work with Uproot Talent, we'll be sure to call you in and unpack the why with you. #antioppression #trusttheprocess #alwaysunlearning

#realtalk I have a love and hate relationship with LinkedIn -- it has always felt performative, just another platform to boast about titles, accolades and "career wins", when that's just a slice of who I am (cue in: why I also created the Uproot Talent Network). It took me some time to understand how to use this platform as a tool in my career development and growth. My perspective evolved and began to make LinkedIn "work for me". I optimized my profile, leveraged connections, met some amazing people, and started to receive dozens of messages in my inbox from recruiters with opportunities. 💥🤯 Join me next Wednesday for our monthly career development experience #free to Uproot Talent Network members and learn tips and strategies to: 🌱 optimize their Linkedin profile page 🌱 maximize the job search tool 🌱 reach field experts 🌱 build your online presence and attract recruiters, so they’re finding and messaging you about opportunities (not the other way around!). ☀️☀️☀️ RSVP: https://lnkd.in/e-ktVtWk *Only 100 spots* -- What's the Uproot Talent Network? This is a virtual learning experience designed for members of the Uproot Talent Network - a national community and job board for underrepresented talent in #socialimpact. Members gain access to our curated job board, free career development workshops, resources and events. Revolutionaries You Should Know: Kochiyama spent two years in a concentration camp in Arkansas following the Pearl Harbor bombings which fueled a fire in her that would soon lead to her political activism in the 1960s. She was a fixture in support movements involving organizations such as the Young Lords and the Harlem Community for Self Defense. As founder of Asian Americans for Action, she also sought to build a more political Asian American movement that would link itself to the struggle for Black liberation. Kochiyama soon met and joined forces with Malcolm X working for racial justice and human rights. Kochiyama was present on the day Malcolm X was shot in 1965. Power to Kochiyama and all organizers linking their struggle to the struggle for Black liberation. It takes all of us. #alwaysunlearning #revolutionaryleadership #organize #AAPI

Organizational Gaslighting: “intentionally deny the facts and blame others for the problem they generate. [They] attempt to puff up their own image while denying evidence of their malfeasance, enabling them to escape culpability for the systemic inequalities they produce.” (pg.59) Thanks to author, Victoria Reyes, for this great definition and examples of what women of color often experience in the workplace.
