The clothing industry has been faced with a waste problem for decades… EU countries alone generate more than 5 million tonnes of textile waste every year! This is because it is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to recycle garments when we no longer need them. There is also the issue of overstocking when demand doesn’t meet supply. US-based textile innovation studio unspun have found a solution to many of the textile production challenges, with a revolutionary manufacturing process. Their technology weaves items of clothing together in 3D, reducing the need for stitching, and making it possible to unweave and then reuse the fabric over and over again. Their streamlined micro-factories, which can be deployed in close proximity to the point of sale, are automated and require far less energy than a traditional manufacturing process. It’s for this reason that we are really proud to announce that DECATHLON PULSE is investing in unspun™ to support their expansion and deployment into the European market. We’re really excited about this partnership for three reasons: Firstly, the potential to significantly reduce the textile industry’s impact on the planet. Secondly, implanting a factory in close proximity to the place where purchases are being made will really improve the overall customer experience and time to market. Finally, the speed at which this tech produces items means that we can imagine a future where each purchase is made to order, significantly reducing overstock.
