Regional Director Europe and Central Asia at UNOPS

I have just returned from my first mission as #UNOPS Regional Director Europe and Central Asia to Türkiye and Uzbekistan and remain super impressed at the power of #UNOPS and its people. Firstly two days in Ankara to meet key government and #UN partners, particularly Resident Coordinator Babatunde A. Ahonsi, #UNWomen Country Director Asya Varbanova, and Director General Süreyya Erkan of the Ministry of Family and Social Services, with whom we will shortly partner to together deliver an important project for women in earthquake affected areas. Moving on to #Uzbekistan, I had the honour to meet President Shavkat Mirziyoyev as we handed over equipment procured on behalf of the government of Uzbekistan at the opening of the oncology and radiology hospital in Tashkent and discussed future opportunities with Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov. Also great broad and lively discussions with Shukhrat Vafaev from the Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan. I then had the opportunity to have a strong and fruitful conversation with Resident Coordinator Sabine Machl about strengthening partnerships to speed up support to Uzbekistan. Travelling with Freya von Groote and meeting with the strong and effective #UNOPS #Uzbekistan team was the icing on the cake. A committed and dedicated team working to deliver lifesaving support. The week has renewed my faith in #UNOPS’ ability to deliver, the strength of a UN system that works better together and a deep faith in the goodness of people to support each other.

UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNOPS Deputy Executive Director Delivery and Partnerships

I’ve just returned from Jordan – one of my first missions as UNOPS Deputy Executive Director for Delivery and Partnerships. It was incredible to witness firsthand the impactful work being done by my colleagues together with our partners on the ground. While there, I had the opportunity to visit several projects implemented by UNOPS, in support of the national health and social development sectors. This includes visiting King Hussein Medical Center with Regional Director Bana Kaloti and our amazing colleagues. I also met with some of our key partners to discuss UNOPS support for Jordan’s active efforts to respond to the Gaza crisis and to the overall national development priorities. Our Amman office supports UNOPS operations across the Middle East, a region facing significant challenges and complexities. To see the unwavering commitment of my colleagues towards advancing peace, equality and opportunity was truly inspiring. Their tireless efforts are delivering a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals.

🏫 This month, UNOPS announced the completion of repairs at 26 schools in four regions of Ukraine. This is part of the 'School Repairs in Ukraine' project funded by the EU's European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) Department EU in Emergencies. 👩🏫 Damaged by the war, these facilities could not offer face-to-face learning to their students. Now, with new windows and doors, repaired roofs and heating systems, restored walls, and renovated classrooms and sports halls, they are one step closer to welcoming children once again, as soon as the security situation allows it. Our work continues, as the project plans to undertake repairs and shelter establishment at a total of 75 schools!
