Next week, States Parties gather in Geneva for the second Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The Treaty is regarded as the basis of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and an essential foundation for the pursuit of nuclear disarmament. It rests on three pillars: 1️⃣ Preventing the spread of nuclear weapons 2️⃣ Furthering the goal of nuclear disarmament 3️⃣ Promoting cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The next Review Conference of the NPT will be held in 2026. In the three years leading up to that meeting, the Preparatory Committee convenes annually to consider principles, objectives and ways to promote the full implementation of the Treaty, as well as its universality, and to make recommendations to the Review Conference. At this second Preparatory Committee meeting, States parties will consider specific matters of substance relating to the implementation of the Treaty and relevant decisions.
