More than 225,000 students are enrolled in the UNC System’s 16 university campuses across the state and the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the country’s first public, residential high school for gifted students. The UNC System is one of the strongest and most successful systems of public higher education in the nation. It’s mission—to discover, create, transmit, and apply knowledge to address the needs of individuals and society—remains true to the University’s founding ideal of shared knowledge in a free society. In addition, the UNC System has a long-standing commitment to public service. The UNC Center for Public Television, the UNC Health Care System, the NC Arboretum, and other University affiliates and programs reap social and economic benefits for the citizens of the state. System Office The UNC System Office, located in Raleigh, houses the offices of the president and senior administrative staff for the University. This core administrative staff executes the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and provides Systemwide leadership and support in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, communications, strategy and policy, human resources, legal affairs, and government relations. • The UNC System has awarded nearly $29 million to expand nursing education at 12 public universities and North Carolina’s Area Health Education Centers. The grants are part of a groundbreaking effort to address the nursing #workforce shortage in North Carolina. Like many states across the country, North Carolina is coping with an alarming drop in #nursing professionals. The state is projected to have a shortage of up to 18,600 registered nurses over the next decade, a major challenge for health care providers and an aging patient population. Nursing students face rigorous education and licensure requirements, which makes it challenging to quickly expand the nursing workforce. And the Great Resignation, which saw tens of millions of Americans voluntarily quit their jobs in the aftermath of the pandemic, has sharply impacted health care professions and added to the decline of working nurses. The System’s goal is to increase its output of nursing degrees by 50% over the next 10 years. Learn More: https://ow.ly/c2ml50SCyiv #NCHigherEd #UNCSystem #healthcare #nced

  • A first-of-its-kind program aimed at bringing former students back into the UNC System to complete their bachelor’s degree is having a substantial effect on enrollment throughout the state. The Re-Enrollment Program – offered by Project Kitty Hawk, an affiliated entity of the UNC System – contacts former students who started a degree at a UNC System institution but never finished. Re-enrollment counselors walk them through options of when and how they can resume their studies, including re-enrolling at their former university or finding another institution within the UNC System that fits their needs. Since the PKH Re-Enrollment Program began in May 2023, 1,791 students have been brought back into UNC System institutions through the program. Fifty-two percent of students who have re-enrolled through the PKH Re-Enrollment Program have been out of school for at least three years – a demographic that universities across the country often struggle to bring back into higher education Learn More: https://ow.ly/8owL50SxbI9

  • The UNC Board of Governors is under new leadership, with an all-female slate of officers for the first time in UNC System history. The board unanimously elected Wendy Murphy as the new board chair, Kellie Hunt Blue as the vice chair, and Pearl Burris-Floyd as the secretary. “I’m honored to be elected chair at a time when three women will assume leadership roles as Board officers for the first time in history,” Murphy said. “This is a critical moment for higher education, and I’m blessed to serve alongside Vice Chair Kellie Hunt Blue and Secretary Pearl Burris-Floyd. Together, we have meaningful experience on university boards in North Carolina, and I know we will always keep students at the forefront of our minds when making decisions about the university.”   Learn More: https://ow.ly/Lygr50SsUwj #UNCSystem #NCHigherEd #NCed
