Tina and Wynonna are calves that have been “adopted” by Maine elementary school students as part of the #DiscoveryDairy program. 📈 The University of Maine System (UMS) remains the state’s leading driver of degree attainment and economic mobility, with official data released last week showing increased undergraduate, graduate and law student enrollment this fall. Maine’s public universities are outpacing regional and national trends, despite the state's demographic challenges. Region-leading affordability, relevant degree and certificate programs on-campus and online, and seamless pathways from other schools, including the Maine Community College System, are fueling the growth. So is direct admission of Maine high school students who were successful in the System's early college programs. 🐮 “College was always a goal of mine, but it was difficult to decide which one. Receiving the offer for direct admission to the University of Maine felt like a weight off my chest,” said Maddison Jackson, an animal and veterinary science major from Presque Isle who is part of UMaine's first-year class of more than 2,000 students — its largest since 2021. “The biggest factor for me was cost and the offer I received from UMaine was impossible to pass up. While this was not my first choice, I am so glad now that I chose UMaine to take my first step toward my dream career of being a veterinarian.” 💻 “Through the early college program, I was able to experience what being a student at the University of Southern Maine was like while I was still in high school. Based on the quality of those courses and USM’s affordability and flexibility, continuing my education there made sense to me and my family,” said Joseph Herlihy, a USM commuter student from Falmouth who is majoring in technology management, minoring in psychology and working part-time. “The direct admissions program allowed me to avoid the hassle of college applications and streamlined my enrollment to USM. One week out from #ElectionDay, did you know that consistent with national data showing 75% of bachelor's degree completers vote in presidential election years compared with 52% of high school graduates, University of Maine System (UMS) alumni are more likely to vote. As Maine prepares to mark the painful first anniversary of the Lewiston mass shooting, the University of Southern Maine came together with the community this week at its Lewiston-Auburn campus to grieve and honor the lives lost, many who had close ties to the university. Among those remembered was Joshua Seal, who graduated from USM and taught in the university's American Sign Language program. “Moving forward, but not moving on. I think it’s important for us to remember," Cheryl Paluso, University of Southern Maine's assistant director of financial aid, told the Sun Journal. Added graduate student Riley Worth, "What today means, and what we should focus on going forward, is finding a way, a time, a place, whatever it means for each individual person, to remember." 🎂 Today marks the one-year anniversary of the University of Maine at Farmington opening the doors of its new and much improved Sweatt-Winter Child Care and Early Education Center. After nearly five decades of serving Franklin County families, the expanded center provides high-quality early childhood education to 54 children in the community, including 18 infants and toddlers, enabling their parents to participate fully in the workforce. Sweatt-Winter also serves as a lab school for University of Maine at Farmington students preparing to be early childhood educators. Sweatt-Winter demonstrates the close connection and contributions our University of Maine System (UMS) campuses make to their local communities and the incredible importance and impact of public investment in our public universities.
