“We appeal to reason. Peace must prevail.” — United Nations Human Rights chief Volker Türk implores countries to act resolutely to prevent a wider conflict in the Middle East with potentially devastating consequences for civilians. “It is vital that they use their voices and influence to bring the warring parties to the negotiating table to end this.”

It is high time to stop the sickening cycle of escalation after escalation that is leading the people of the Middle East straight over the cliff. Each escalation has served as a pretext for the next. We must never lose sight of the tremendous toll that this growing conflict is taking on civilians. We cannot look away from systematic violations of international humanitarian law. This deadly cycle of tit-for-tat violence must stop. Time is running out.

Wednesday's International Day of Non-Violence highlights the remarkable power of peaceful protest. The day marks the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, a leader who remained committed to the principle of non-violence, even in the most difficult circumstances. “Gandhi believed non-violence was the greatest force available to humanity – more powerful than any weapon. Together, let’s build institutions to support that noble vision," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. https://lnkd.in/dVajWJE

Tuesday is International Day of Older Persons. By 2030, older persons are projected to outnumber the number of young people globally. As populations age, the demand for comprehensive healthcare and social support services will continue to grow substantially, particularly for older persons with conditions such as dementia. “We must work to cultivate people-centered care systems that are sustainable and equitable, and they must amplify the voices of older persons by ensuring their participation in policy making,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres “On this International Day of Older Persons, let’s commit to strengthen care and support systems that honour the dignity of older persons and caregivers.” https://lnkd.in/ddqbjVC

Many have said that the differences and divisions in our world are too great for us to come together for the common good. But the Summit of the Future showed that with a spirit of dialogue and compromise, we can join forces to steer our world to a more sustainable path. As this year’s #UNGA activities wind down, we must remember that this is not the end. It is in all our interests to choose the future we want and to guide our world towards it. The journey continues. Let’s keep going.

Amid a dramatic escalation of hostilities across Lebanon, the World Food Programme (WFP) has launched an emergency food operation to reach one million people. “Lebanon is at a breaking point and cannot endure another war,” said Corinne Fleischer, WFP Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe. “A further escalation would be highly detrimental to the people of this region, who have gone through so much already”. As more families flee their homes, humanitarian needs are expected to rise. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/esHJUFRz
