Fostering a culture of sustainability that permeates the civic, professional, and personal lives of our community.

About us

The Sustainability Institute’s mission is to be a catalyst, convener, and champion of sustainability ideas and actions across and beyond the University of New Hampshire (UNH). The institute fosters a culture of sustainability that permeates the civic, professional, and personal lives of members of the UNH community. As a public land-, sea- and space-grant institution, UNH has been dedicated to the public good for over 150 years. Sustainability, the collective commitment to human dignity for all people and ecological integrity in all places, is fundamental to the public good and is a core UNH value. In the process, the institute brings diverse people and ideas together to make the university a model sustainable learning community that reaches beyond campus to engage state, regional, national, and international partners to advance sustainable solutions.

Happy to share some exciting outcomes of partnering with Mexicali Blues, a local family-owned, clothing company dedicated to sustainability. Mexicali Blues participated in our B Impact Clinic last fall and worked with a team of student consultants to complete the B Impact Assessment and help them work toward becoming B Corp Certified. They ethically source handmade clothes and accessories from around the world, building strong relationships with their vendors. Their mission is to empower these communities and share meaningful experiences with customers. These are just some of the things that the B Corp Assessment considers. This spring they also participated in our Climate Action Clinic where a student team collaborated with them to track their greenhouse gas emissions. Completing a full carbon analysis allows organizations like Mexicali Blues to set and achieve tangible goals for emission reduction. Through the Clinics, our students are gaining valuable skills and organizations are making a sustainable impact – a win for students, companies, communities, and the planet. Check out their story and the role a UNH alum is playing in it: https://lnkd.in/ekVPsyH7 A big thank you to our students and community partners for making this collaboration a success! Empowering a Just and Equitable Electric Future as ReVision Energy's Apprenticeship Coordinator for Leadership & Management | Employee-Owned B Corp

Thrilled to see this dream come true! Hisani Foundation Tanzania was born from connections made throughout Lauren's UNH education and travels and Abu and Ann's openness to give back. Please give what you can and support a new NGO. https://gofund.me/0cc03cc6 #unhchangemakers Fiona Wilson Cathy Meyer University of New Hampshire UNH Sustainability Institute UNH Alumni UNH Social Work Thank you Sharon Runge of Kenya Connect for helping dreamers make their dreams come true.

A year ago today, I left Kenya after a life changing trip with an organization called KenyaConnect. There, alongside my classmates and faculty from The University of New Hampshire, I worked and assisted with staff and children in their mobile literacy, GirlBoy Empowerment programs, met with social workers at South Eastern Kenya University, and so much more. After 2 absolutely amazing weeks, I said goodbye to Kenya and my classmates and returned to Tanzania, where I met up with Abu and Ann (pictured below) for a safari. I've lived in Arusha previously and was so excited to finally get home, to my nyumbani. Over the week, I had many ongoing conversations with Abu over meals and while driving the many long miles between parks. It was then that Hisani Foundation TZ was born. My primary mission was to create a similar program to KenyaConnect, but tailor it to the needs of those in the greater Arusha area and beyond. When I was in Kenya, I saw a sign (pictured below) that reads, "I know why I came here. Do you?" When I took that picture, I could not have known that I would even have this idea. But I'm a firm believer that life will put you EXACTLY where you need to be. I am so proud to be a driving force behind Hisani Foundation and am so grateful to my team. I can't wait to see where this takes us! Love, Lauren CEO, President

This spring, Anne E. Richardson served as a business advisor at the UNH B Impact Clinic through the UNH Sustainability Institute. Working with a team of fellow impact-driven business leaders (Mariah Morgan of Stout Heart and Benn Marine & Brittany A. of Campfire), Anne and her students guided hey freya through the B Impact Assessment, a tool that companies use to measure their impact and earn B Corp certification. Congratulations to the student team and hey freya on the completion of a successful B Impact Clinic semester! 🎓🎉 #bimpactassessment #bcorp #businessforgood #unh #businessleaders

  • In a new teaching model this spring, an incredible community of local B Corp business leaders and past UNH B Impact Clinic company clients have stepped forward to help us teach the clinic and mentor our students. This kind of engagement by the business community — working in a hands-on way to inspire and train the next generation of leaders — truly embodies an inherent value of the B Corp movement that sets B Corps apart: collective action and community engagement for a sustainable and equitable future. Check out this article where extraordinary business leaders share their insights on instructing the clinic and mentoring future sustainability leaders. We're grateful to these leaders: • Brittany A., Impact Strategist, Campfire Consulting, and Benn Marine, Director of Social and Environmental Impact, Campfire Consulting. • Mariah Morgan, Principal, Stout HeartAnne E. • Today we’re uplifted by and feeling deep gratitude for your record-breaking support of our changemaker students! This feels especially important this year as we continue to see previous global records being shattered by record degrees of global warming, heat, ocean temperatures, wildfires, flooding, drought, and more.   It’s been our most successful 603 Challenge ever! 138 donors donated and unlocked an additional $153,000 from our generous underwriters: UNH’s Sustainability Advisory Board, as well as the Josephine A. Lamprey Designated Fund at New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the Larrea Family Foundation. Your gifts will help us graduate thousands of passionate UNH changemakers who are becoming well equipped with the skills, experience, and confidence to be part of the solutions for a sustainable and equitable world.    On behalf of our students and staff, THANK YOU!   #UNH603 Fiona Wilson Alexis Dwyer Kathryn Jerome Katie Bouton Ned Dane, CAIA Deborah Merrill-Sands Harry Lamberton Shaun McHugh Robert Bean Atlanta McIlwraith Kate Dumas, CFA Michael Burns Jason McBriarty Phil Meldrum Liz Torrance Andre Beaupre Greg Jansen Austin Perea Ed Farrington, AIF®  Clara Miller Alexandra McPherson Diana Keohane

  • Today's the day to rep the Granite State! The NH Numbers Bonus Challenge is back! The first 1500 donors who make an online (603) Challenge gift today in a total amount containing the numerals 6, 0 and 3 (in any order i.e. $6.03 or $360) will have a $50 bonus added to their gift. Your gifts are supporting programs like our Sustainability Institute Internship program, which is only possible by annual fundraising gifts from people like you! The interns’ work is part of what makes UNH’s approach to sustainability unique: as students, they have the opportunity to work alongside sustainability professionals, play an active role in shaping UNH’s nation-leading sustainability practices, and develop tangible and valuable experience for their future careers. This year, intern projects span research, project design and implementation, outreach and engagement and are being undertaken with collaboration, guidance and support from staff partners across campus. Feedback from this year’s interns demonstrates their passion and action: "I love feeling like I am part of a greater sustainability effort! Being able to help empower other students to learn more and be more active in creating a sustainable community has been one of my greatest opportunities at UNH."   "The internship has allowed me to see how large-scale zero-waste projects can be carried out while developing my skills in budgeting, stakeholder collaboration, and overall project management."   Give today and rep the 603! #UNH603 Fiona Wilson Alexis Dwyer Kathryn Jerome

  • The (603) Challenge is underway and gifts to the Sustainability Institute will support student changemakers from across UNH’s colleges who are eager to contribute to a better future. They’re preparing for careers of impact – contributing solutions for the environment, social justice, and equity. The Sustainability Institute is training students with critical hands-on learning experiences, to help them build skills that will fill the “green skills gap”, while also helping regional organizations advance sustainable practices. And when we hit our goal of 115 donors, $153,000 in additional funding for the Sustainability Institute will be unlocked thanks to our generous underwriters, UNH’s Sustainability Advisory Board, as well as the Josephine A. Lamprey Designated Fund at New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the Larrea Family Foundation. “I’ve always been a passionate advocate for a sustainable future, and as a student at UNH I took full advantage of the Sustainability Institute’s programs. I can genuinely say that because of these experiences, I left my undergraduate with an abundance of meaningful work experience that allowed me to break into an exciting career in sustainability.” - George Anderson ‘22 #UNH603 Fiona Wilson Alexis Dwyer Kathryn Jerome George Anderson

  • It’s here! The (603) Challenge is a week of big impact for UNH student changemakers who want to be part of building a sustainable and equitable world. Give today to make the biggest impact for the Sustainability Institute’s students while the $350,000 in matching funds remain. Your gift can be matched dollar-for-dollar – up to $350 per donor! “If I could distill all my lessons and experiences at UNH down to single thought, it would be this: the world is not a zero-sum place – least of all when it comes to education and experiences. I feel so grateful for all the Sustainability Institute offered me – excellent mentors, the Sustainability Fellowship program, the Social Venture Innovation Challenge, internships, and many other connections and experiences that have helped create the life and career I enjoy today. As an alum I appreciate more and more that none of this was an accident. I benefited from the careful planning and generosity of Wildcats before me, and now is my time to pay it forward!” - Andy DeMeo ‘18 And this year we have our own unique area challenge! Our generous underwriters, UNH’s Sustainability Advisory Board, as well as the Josephine A. Lamprey Designated Fund at New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the Larrea Family Foundation, have stepped up with $153,000 in additional funding for the Sustainability Institute if we reach our goal of 115 donors. • We love seeing the different ways students incorporate sustainability into their personal and academic journeys!

Sustainability is how I incorporate my values into my work. ⭐️ Shay Sullivan ‘27 🏠 Exeter, NH 📓 Business Administration 👀 Marketing Option Sustainability Dual Major 🧘 NH Youth Movement Yoga Club The only thing I really wanted from my college experience was to find my community. I’ve done that and more. I’m flourishing here. I’m more comfortable being myself, I’ve made great new friends, and I’ve found so many avenues for my creativity. Technically my business admin option is undecided, but I'm leaning towards marketing. I love the human aspect: what makes people want to buy things? Also the creativity! I’ve always been passionate about sustainability. I really care about people, the environment, and this planet. And it’s actually what sealed the deal on UNH for me – the Sustainability Institute spoke at Paul’s Admitted Student Visit Day. Once I realized how easy it is to weave sustainability into my Business Admin Degree through the Sustainability Dual Major, I was 👌 (It also didn’t hurt that I loved the campus, and Paul College is beautiful –but that was the moment!) I believe understanding sustainability is essential for ethical business practices. It feels like many companies are moving in the right direction and I want to be part of that. I don’t want to sugarcoat things, so just to be clear: being a first-year student is nerve-wracking. But I felt supported when I got here and I’ve found my footing. For example, I grab dinner with my friends every night. We live all across campus, so I look forward to always meeting up to unwind! The music scene here is amazing, and I love hammocking on campus. I think I’ll audition for the UNH Symphonic Band next year — I can play the saxophone and the guitar. 🎸🎷 The professors at Paul have also been amazing. Special shoutout to Professor Hatch, who taught Business Ethics. I just loved her charisma. I’m already looking into some of the other opportunities the UNH Sustainability Institute offers. They’ve got a lot of great programs! College is an opportunity I feel a lot of people take for granted, and I don’t want to do that. I’m going to pursue my passions and do my best. #PaulPride
