We just launched the world’s largest standalone public opinion survey on #ClimateChange. Covering 77 countries and representing 87% of the world’s population, the #PeoplesClimateVote 2024 explores a world of views on the climate crisis. People were asked how they are being affected by the impacts of climate change, and what actions they want their leaders to take. The survey found that an overwhelming 8️⃣0️⃣% of people around the world want their country to take stronger #ClimateAction. With critical climate thresholds dangerously close, the people have asked for stronger commitments from their government, including a quick transition away from fossil fuels, international collaboration on climate and many other key climate policies. Check out the results below to see what climate action people want to see from their country and learn more at: https://lnkd.in/e9xWsBkP

For decades, #Afghanistan was the world's leading illicit opium producer, accounting for 70% of global output. Fast forward to 2022, when a ban by the Afghan de facto authorities slashed poppy cultivation by more than 92%. However, the solving of one problem can be the genesis of another. The opium economy ran deep within the nation’s fabric, creating a cycle of instability and underdevelopment that saw annual revenue from the poppy economy plummet, from $1.3 billion in 2022 to $110 million in 2023. Behind these figures are local farmers – by some estimates nearly 600,000 of them – who have been plunged into poverty from the loss of one of Afghanistan’s few sustained sources of income. Given the opium trade's cross-sectoral influence on the Afghan economy, a decline in production affects other industries like agriculture, manufacturing, and services. What can be done? Replacing the massive poppy industry is no small feat and requires substantial investment in alternative livelihoods and drought-resistant agriculture. With approximately $90 million in funding from the U.S. Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, we are incentivizing thousands of former poppy cultivators to switch to high-value horticultural crops. While promising, long-term success hinges on continued international support and alternative private sector opportunities. “Some of our greatest risks lie if we don't solve problems - inequality, poverty, but also transition to clean energy, addressing gender equity. I mean, these are things that will tear us apart and will destroy the foundations for life. So we have to find a way to come together and work on this.” In this week's episode of the United Nations' Awake At Night podcast with Melissa Fleming, UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner reflects on humanity's thorniest challenges, his hopes for a fairer, cleaner future, and the vital lessons he learned in rural Pakistan.
