We don’t have time for “out of sight, out of mind.” Our relationship to the ocean needs to urgently change, and our efforts have only skimmed the surface to date. To motivate widespread momentum for the ocean, we need to awaken new depths. Join us for UN WOD 2024 as we bring together global, cross-sector experts, policy-makers, scientists, activists, artists and more to Awaken New Depths of collaboration to better protect the ocean and all it sustains. UN WOD 2024 will take us on a journey of discovery through the ocean’s vastness, tapping into the wisdom and expertise of global policy-makers, scientists, thought leaders, and artists to expand our perspectives and appreciation for our blue planet, build new foundations for our relationship to the ocean, and ignite a wave of action towards necessary change. Tune in virtually on 7 June 2024*, as we dive beneath the surface and explore new depths of understanding, compassion, collaboration and commitment to protect the ocean and all it sustains. Register now for the live broadcasted event from 10AM-1:30PM EDT on Friday, 7 June at UNWorldOceansDay.org. 🌊 UN World Oceans Day 2024 is hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (@undoalos) of the Office of Legal Affairs in partnership with @Oceanic.Global. *While the official UN designation for World Oceans Day is 8 June, the 2024 event will be celebrated on Friday, 7 June.

The World Ocean Assessment (WOA) is the only global integrated assessment of the ocean.
About us
The World Ocean Assessment (WOA) is the only global integrated assessment of the ocean along all three pillars of sustainable development. It provides a comprehensive global analysis of the social, environmental, demographic, and economic trends affecting the state of the ocean to inform decision-making by Governments, international processes, and policy-makers, thereby contributing to the sustainable management of human activities that affect the ocean. The WOA is the main output of the Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects (Regular Process). It is a continuously evolving assessment that builds on each previous assessment, allowing for knowledge to be built and trends uncovered. Each new edition of the WOA developed so far provides the most up-to-date information on topics covered within the previous assessments, highlighting new findings within key focus areas, and further bridge knowledge and capacity-building gaps surrounding the state of the ocean as a whole. The WOA is a collective multidisciplinary effort by hundreds of experts from around the world and is supported by its secretariat: the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea. The WOA, with its ongoing findings, and related activities has informed the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly its Goal 14 on Life Below Water, as well as the United Nations Decades of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and on Ecosystem Restoration.

Squids are vital to marine ecosystems, acting as both prey and predator and supporting the survival of a wide range of species, from commercially valuable fish to top predators like sharks and whales. Their rapid growth rates and high reproductive potential are key to maintaining healthy marine food chains. However, increasing demand and unsustainable fishing practices threaten squid populations. Protecting squids under the UN Fish Stocks Agreement (UNFSA) is crucial for sustainable oceans, as it ensures the responsible management of squid fisheries and helps prevent overexploitation. Effective conservation is essential for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14. Visit our website for more information: https://lnkd.in/gEE87VFr #sustainableoceans #blueeconomy #Goal14 #UNFSA
