Carolina scientists have defined lab automation and created AI that enables a robot to work beside humans. “We’re focusing first on correctness and safety,” computer scientist Ron Alterovitz says. “Once those are in place, we’ll speed it up and it can work 24/7 in ways that humans don’t necessarily want to.” #UNCResearch #AI #robotics #discovery #computerscience #automation . . This week, I was featured in Research UNCovered, a series through UNC Research that highlights academic researchers within the UNC Chapel Hill community. In this article, I discussed my studies on the rhetoric of responsibilization in the context of PrEP campaigns, the topic for which I conducted my Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). Thank you so much to the RUNC team, including the spectacular Megan Mendenhall and Alyssa M. LaFaro, who worked with me on this article! You can read about my research using this link: https://lnkd.in/d5zcrm39
Catherine Pabalate researches the intersection of public health and humanities. https://unc.live/3YAyaOi An English and biology double-major, Catherine studies how responsibilization — a rhetorical phenomenon where practitioners deem their patients knowledgeable enough to make appropriate medical decisions — can strain the doctor-patient relationship and influence patient mental health. Catherine discovered the field of health humanities after enrolling in a course called "Medicine, Literature, and Culture." The class focused on health-based narratives and sociocultural issues within health and medicine. "My professors have demonstrated the beauty, complexity, and synergy of humanities research," she shares. "Through my coursework, I’ve discovered a true passion for learning that has encouraged me to pursue higher education. I’ve learned about numerous avenues of English research, from comparative literature to digital rhetoric, each with dozens of devoted academics. My professors remind me that my field is still flourishing with innovative research questions and scholarly conversation, which motivates me to follow my desired career path." #UNCResearch #publichealth #English #literature #healthhumanities #health #humanities #mentalhealth #undergrad #unc #research #gdtbath

The UNC Center for Galapagos Studies received $600,000 from Royal Caribbean Group to support research and learning initiatives, enabling the expansion of research projects, community outreach programs, and student engagement. The center partners with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito to operate the Galapagos Science Center on San Cristobal Island, the only university science facility of its kind in the archipelago. #UNCResearch #funding #royalcaribbean #galapagos #environment #education #community . . “…by iterating on the medley and contrafacture “remix” formula, Hamilton’s voter mobilization PSAs have successfully and continually inspired a targeted audience despite a shifting and contentious political landscape.” Musicians, actors, influencers, and other celebrities often make endorsements and pitches during election seasons. Kendall Winter, Ph.D. 2024, discusses the unique and enduring effect of the Hamilton-inspired voter PSAs that first came on the scene in 2016. Take a deep dive into these PSAs and how they’ve changed over the last 8 years with Dr. Winter, in her recent Musicology Now article titled, “Hamilton’s Voter Mobilization ‘Remixes’ Since 2016.” #UNCMusic #vote #hamilton #musicology #unc #gdtbath UNC Research University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
