UNC Research asked Jack Griffith what brought him to Carolina. Here’s what the longtime Tar Heel, who studies human proteins and telomeres, had to say. “It was time for me to move into a tenure-track position. I had a role at Stanford’s biochemistry department as a non-tenure-track research fellow and had been a postdoctoral fellow with the Nobel Laurate Arthur Kornberg. In 1978, I visited Harvard, the University of Wisconsin, UCLA, and UNC-Chapel Hill looking for a new opportunity. "What struck me about Carolina was not only the lovely and very livable environment but the cadre of young faculty members who were building a center for molecular biology. I knew three of them — Clyde Hutchinson, Marshall Edgell, and John Newbold — from when I was a graduate student at Caltech. There was also a close friend of mine from Stanford, Paul Modrich, who was a new faculty member at Duke. This, combined with Joe Pagano’s enthusiasm for the new UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center he was establishing, was enough to draw me to Chapel Hill.” Jack Griffith is a faculty member at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and a professor within the UNC School of Medicine. He has been contributing to research at Carolina for 46 years. We're looking forward to this #UNCResearchWeek event! Presented by UNC Rural, the Relationship-Driven Rural Research session invites the campus community to a panel and Q&A on the importance of relationships in research, particularly as it applies to North Carolina with the 2nd largest rural population in the U.S. Mark your calendars! #UNCResearch #event #research #community
I am excited to share insights on building rural research partnerships with one of my community partners, Dr. Elizabeth Locklear at Rocky Point Pavilion Pharmacy, on October 23 at 10:00. UNC Research is hosting this webinar; register here: https://lnkd.in/eNEC6Xtf #UNCResearchWeek

Bob Goldstein who is the James L. Peacock III Distinguished Professor in the UNC Biology Department (he's also Adjunct Professor of Art and Art History) is well known for his developmental biology research using model systems like C. elegans & tardigrades - which already makes him amazing. But in addition to his important research, he has been leading a series of state-wide DIY microscope workshops for the past decade. In this role, his workshop just produced its 1000th microscope for North Carolina schools - broadening access to microscopes especially in underserved communities across the state. It is another example of how UNC Research talents bring research into the lives of students. It is absolutely in University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's DNA to serve the people of North Carolina and Bob's work is such a great exemplar.
For nearly a decade, #UNC biology professor Bob Goldstein has visited schools across North Carolina to host DIY microscope workshops, specifically targeting schools in low-income areas, where students might not have access to microscopes. Recently, his workshop produced its 1000th microscope for NC schools. Discover how his project supports schools statewide and encourages students to explore their curiosity https://unc.live/3ZOPIZ9

In May 2022, Yael Shiloh-Malawsky, a neurologist at the UNC School of Medicine, met two new patients combatting a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disorder called Batten disease. With help from UNC, the twin girls were able to get personalized treatment from bench to bedside in record time. #UNCResearch #medicine #healthcare #personalizedcare . . Spoken language is predictive of many positive life outcomes, such as employment, social interaction, play skills and more. But, researchers still don’t know why some children talk and others don’t, especially as it relates to historically marginalized and minoritized populations. A team of researchers lead by Connie Kasari, PhD, (David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA) and FPG Director Brian Boyd, PhD, will collaborate on a unique project to assess behavioral and neurological markers of language development in low-income children within their family settings, gathering valuable information that could lead to earlier, more targeted interventions for a population that has been largely underrepresented in autism research. #Autism #AutismResearch #Language

Noah Kittner in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health was quoted in a CBS News story about how climate change impacts vulnerable communities. #UNCResearch #news #quoted #policy
More Americans are having to choose between food and energy bills. Nationally, 16% of households are in energy poverty, says Dr. Noah Kittner of the Gillings School. "Old, inefficient buildings are prompting people to supplement their energy needs in ways that increase the costs," he explains. He and other public health and environmental experts say that as climate change continues to create extreme weather conditions, more policy efforts are needed to help vulnerable communities. https://lnkd.in/eQ96aH95

Two new studies from researchers at CIAPEC-INTA and the Global Food Research Program at UNC-Chapel Hill add to the evidence that mandatory nutrient warning labels on food and beverage packages are an effective way to nudge shoppers towards healthier choices: 🛒 During Phase 2 of Chile’s Law of Food Labeling and Advertising, Chileans bought 37% less sugar, 22% less sodium, 16% less saturated fat and 23% fewer total calories from products with warning labels. 🛑 In the third and final phase of the law, 63% of ≈10,000 products sampled from Chilean supermarkets had at least one nutrient warning label, and industry compliance was high but not complete — 4% of products sampled were high in sugar, saturated fat, sodium, and/or calories but failed to display the required label(s) on the front-of-pack. Read more about both studies and hear from study authors Natalia Rebolledo, Camila Corvalan, and Lindsey Smith Taillie, PhD here: https://lnkd.in/esCDGM8J
