As we enter hurricane season, it's crucial to highlight how coastal cities can protect themselves from future disasters. New York City has weathered its share of storms, with Hurricane Sandy serving as a wake-up call. In 2012, it flooded 17% of the city, claiming 44 lives and causing $19 billion in damages in total. With 520 miles of coastline, the threat of sea level rise and storm surges looms large. In response, projects like the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency (LMCR) and East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) are transforming how the city protects itself. From innovative flood barriers to elevated parks and green infrastructure, these initiatives aim to safeguard neighborhoods and keep vital urban hubs thriving. How can we ensure that storied communities thrive amidst urban transformations? ULI’s Advisory Services Program, in partnership with ULI Dallas-Fort Worth, City of Fort Worth, and Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, sought to answer this during their recent visit to Fort Worth. Their expert panel provided recommendations to support the Northside and Historic Marine neighborhoods as the Panther Island project progresses, which will create over 300 acres of riverwalk development and protect 2,400 acres from flooding. “The idea is to take the best practices to create a roadmap for smart development that lasts generations,” said Omar Gonzalez, chair of the ULI advisory service program. Their insights emphasize preserving the neighborhood’s cultural identity, enhancing affordable housing, and engaging residents in the development process.
