ACM at UCLA

Our first annual Hack2Impact, a social good hackathon hosted by our Impact initiative and LA Blueprint, invited participants to develop innovative technical solutions for local nonprofit organizations 💡 In partnership with Foster Nation, The Miracle Project, Heal One World, and BreakingTaboo, hackers received problem statements and solution suggestions to guide their 36-hour coding journey. From May 17-19 in the De Neve Plaza Rooms at UCLA, hackers invested phenomenal effort into designing, developing, and presenting their projects. This unique opportunity allowed students to apply their skills for social good, demonstrating the potential of technology to drive positive change 🌎 Other ACM committees also contributed by hosting engaging workshops on a variety of topics: ACM AI on building a chatbot with Gemini, ACM Design on usability in UX, ACM Studio (ACM @ UCLA) on game design and storytelling, and ACM Teach LA (ACM @ UCLA) on React and Firebase. 🚀✨ (Winning $140) My First Ever Coding Competition: Break the Binary, a 6-Hour Marathon of Innovation and Teamwork (ft. Jane Street, ACM, Association for Computing Machinery) ✨🚀 I recently had the privilege of participating in Break The Binary, a 6-hour coding and problem-solving competition hosted by ACM, Association for Computing Machinery (ICPC & W branches), sponsored by Jane Street, attracting 100 registrants. 🔝 Highlights: - As a member of Team Yip-Yip, alongside Joshua P Ching and Queenie Wu, we secured the #2 spot in competitive programming! We handled problems with C and Java using depth-first search, breadth-first search, and sorting. - In the non-programming round, I teamed up with Yip-Yip members and Selina Song, Cindy Ding, and Alyssa Leung to win #1. We solved various puzzles covering topics like palindromes, the battleship board game, and plenty of cyphers. Fun fact, they were all themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender! I was not expecting there to be prize money, but we received $140 in total. 🙏 Beyond the two competition rounds, the event featured panel discussions, presentations, and even free boba. A huge shoutout to ACM ICPC and ACM W for organizing this impactful event. It highlighted the importance of diversity and collaboration in driving technological advancements. The care and passion of the officers were evident throughout the entire event. This was my first coding competition, but definitely not my last. One of the presidents even recognized me by name from their info session, which was incredibly sweet :) I aspire to be an inspiring leader like them someday.

ACM ICPC and ACM W started the Winter Quarter off strong with Break the Binary, ACM at UCLA’s first programming competition for beginners and underrepresented groups. Check out how they combined Avatar, Puzzles, and Programming to create an event promoting diversity and problem solving!
