The Policing Leadership Academy is hiring a Program Manager! Come work with me at the University of Chicago Crime Lab. The Policing Leadership Academy (PLA) is a violence reduction initiative that aims to prevent violent crime, support officers, and improve fairness and effectiveness in policing. According to a new piece from ABC News, there’s an alarming rise in the lethality of shootings due to machine gun conversion devices known as “Glock switches,” which transform semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons. But legislative action targeting high-capacity magazines and Glock switches could save hundreds or even thousands of lives every year. Today, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a landmark advisory declaring firearm violence in America to be a public health crisis with devastating and far-reaching consequences for the nation's health and well-being. For over 15 years, the University of Chicago Crime Lab has designed and scaled data-driven innovations to reduce gun violence, and we deeply appreciate the Surgeon General’s focus on this urgent public health challenge. The advisory urges action now to reduce firearm-related injuries and deaths and calls for the implementation of community violence interventions to support populations with an increased risk of firearm violence involvement. The University of Chicago Crime Lab was proud to engage United States Senator Dick Durbin at the Community Safety Leadership Academies over the past month. Students from the second cohort of the Community Violence Intervention Leadership Academy (CVILA)–a first-of-its-kind program to train CVI leaders from across America–met with Senator Durbin to discuss criminal justice reform efforts and emphasize the need to develop leaders in the CVI field. We were also thrilled to have Senator Durbin provide keynote remarks at our graduation ceremony for the second cohort of our Policing Leadership Academy (PLA). We sincerely thank Senator Durbin for his support! Learn more about the CVILA: https://lnkd.in/g2KCUgqK Learn more about the PLA: https://lnkd.in/gb4ExXvc
