At the recent TWIN Global PROXIMITY event, Peter Bryant took the audience on a thought-provoking dive to better understand the dynamic interplay of factors that drive change – beyond what we generally consider.   Here’s one small underlying factor – with the growth of AI, the energy needed to run AI data centers, will consume from the present 3% to 10% of grid capacity (it takes 10 times more electricity for ChatGPT to answer a query than Google). He stressed the need for critical thinking and understanding of AI’s pervasive presence in our daily lives. He also spoke about the potential impact on human decision-making skills due to over-reliance on AI, urging us to be mindful of how these systems shape our behaviors and choices. Rajeev Tummala, Head of Digital & Data, Asian & MENA, HSBC Securities Services (Singapore): Rajeev shared insights on enterprises managing the implementation of AI applications, emphasizing the importance of understanding AI’s implications in each domain and fostering digital literacy among teams. He also pointed out the importance of aligning AI capabilities with business needs to ensure effective implementation. David Shrier, a globally recognized Futurist and a Professor of Practice at the Imperial College Business School, shared some fascinating insights regarding the challenges and opportunities in the evolving AI landscape at the recent TWIN Proximity two-day meeting. These include: AI’s Impact on the Workforce: David mentioned that by 2032, AI is expected to profoundly impact 60% of jobs in G7 countries. It will lead to significant job losses but AI will also create new opportunities, adding up to $12 trillion to the global GDP over the next decade. In his talk, David pointed out the big question that remains: Who will buy the goods and services if so many jobs are lost? Employing AI to Advance Humanity: David pointed out that AI isn’t just about business efficiency; it’s also about making the world a better place. For instance, David asked, what can AI do to help solve humanity's biggest problems? He argued that we should leverage it to tackle global challenges, like how to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Creating Sovereign AI Systems: Countries are investing in AI systems aligned with their national values, driven by concerns over who controls these powerful technologies. With most AI experts concentrated in big tech companies, however, we need to figure out how to decentralize this scarce knowledge to ensure that AI systems reflect diverse values. Finally, David provided some examples of Proximity in action: how AI, automation, 3D printing, and robotics are bringing production closer to the point of demand.
