This article in Roland Berger's Insights newsletter provides a good overview of why and how companies should better understand and plan for long-term water risk. Although the article focuses on the food and beverage industry, the need to look at water and water risk applies to any industry since water resources underly the success of every business. According to Partner, Bill Malarkey, to ensure long-term success, companies need "to view and manage water as a shared resource and to look beyond your business’s operational ‘fence’ to consider your impact at the water catchment level." Roland Berger is correct in recommending a holistic approach, starting with gaining broad understanding across a value chain to identify both risk and opportunity, and prioritize areas for action. The business case for protecting the natural environment and nature based solutions (NBS) is growing. No company will be shielded from escaling climate impacts which are most often experienced through water related events. In this interview with James Carlo Cascone and Stephanie Cárdenas of Deloitte, along with Tim Christopherson of Salesforce, they discuss how NBS can help companies build broader nature-positive strategies to address environmental challenges and enhance operational resilience. Christopherson points out that one of the challenges companies face in developing a successful nature-positive strategy is the complexity of aggregating data from producers and suppliers and transforming that data into useful insights to guide climate strategy. That challenge can be met through partnerships with entities that can help make data aggregation, visualization, analysis, and forecasting faster and easier. Read more to learn about how Salesforce is changing the narrative on the power and value of NBS. https://lnkd.in/euMziF5H #naturepositive #NBS #dataaggregation #climatestrategy

All water is inherently connected, with pollution in one part of a watershed influencing downstream water quality. A new study backs this up, revealing that over half the water flowing from US rivers is at risk of pollution due to lack of federal protection for ephemeral streams under the Clean Water Act. The study's lead author, Craig Brinkerhoff, points out that,“In theory, pollution in those ephemeral streams will ultimately influence water many kilometers away that is, at least nominally, still regulated by the Clean Water Act.” and that, "We can’t regulate water bodies ad hoc.” All of this points to the increasing importance of taking a holistic approach to addressing water challenges. Decision-makers need tools and partners to help them first understand and visualize water challenges on a broad scale before moving to understand and address local challenges. Only a comprehensive approach will protect our shared water resources. https://lnkd.in/erJyUZqE #USRivers #WaterData #watershed
