Turning Experience Into Practice

About us

ATA's Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) is a diverse group of industry professionals who work together to improve truck equipment and technology. Since 1979, TMC has been a technical council of American Trucking Associations, Inc. TMC develops industry-recognized recommended practices that are used by fleet managers to efficiently specify and maintain vehicles. TMC’s industry best practices also provide guidance to manufacturers in the design of their equipment. We also hold two general meetings each year featuring educational sessions and industry meetings developing recommended practices; at our annual meeting our Transportation Technology Exhibition attracts more than 5,000 attendees, features more than 400,000 sq.ft of space and showcases more than 300 exhibitors. Our fall meeting features the National Technician Skills Competitions (TMCSuperTech) for professional vehicle technicians and the National Student Technician Competition — TMCFutureTech. TMC began in 1956 when a small, but select group of maintenance directors sat down with representatives from the truck manufacturing community to discuss recurring equipment maintenance problems. Since then, TMC has grown into an organization of more than 2,300 members with representatives from virtually every sector of the industry: fleets, owner/operators, manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, educators, press, association representatives and technicians. http://tmcannual.trucking.org

Updates

  • TMC Fleet Members Top Maintenance Concerns Continue to Shift in 2024 Inflation Tops TMC’s Summer 2024 List, According to Recent Council Survey The things that keep fleet managers up at night continued to shift through the middle of July 2024, according to a summer survey conducted by ATA’s Technology & Maintenance Council’s (TMC)— at least when it comes to TMC fleet members’ top maintenance worries.  More than 400 TMC fleet members were asked to share their current top five fleet maintenance concerns, based on a wide-ranging list of 85 possible choices from which to select. Of those responding, the following were identified as the top reported concerns in descending order, even though the list did not prove to be a clean top five: 1. The top maintenance issue identified in the summer 2024 survey was Inflation (Economic). 2. Brakes and Cost Containment were identified as the number two maintenance issue facing fleets (tie). 3. Technician Training was identified by fleets as number three. 4. New Technology Challenges and Labor Rates were identified as number four (tie). 5. Technician Retention and Technician Staffing were tied as number five. Warranty Awareness just missed the top five coming in at sixth place. Inflation and Brakes appeared in the TMC top five list for the first time in the ongoing series, significantly placing as first and second top concern respectively. Dropping from the top 5 since the last survey was conducted in the fall of 2023 were Aftertreatment, Roadside Breakdowns, Data Management and Vendor Reliability. The list changed from the last time TMC surveyed fleet members on this question in November 2023. At that time, members said their top five concerns were: 1.   Technician Staffing 2.   Aftertreatment 3.   Roadside Breakdowns 4.   Data Management, New Technology Challenges, and Vendor Reliability (tie) 5.   New Equipment Availability

  • A reminder that ATA’s Technology & Maintenance Council's (TMC) next 30 minute "Chats With the General Chairman" will take place on July 17, 2024 at 3pm ET. This year's General Chairman & Treasurer Amanda Schuier has made one of her goals "member engagement" and part of this theme is how TMC's members can get more involved with our Council. This edition of the monthly series will feature a discussion on how to get involved in various Council volunteer committees, what sorts of volunteer positions are available, and what’s involved in doing them. This will be a casual Teams meeting, with a couple minutes of information, then we'll kick it over to a Q & A to make sure all of your questions get answered. If you'd like to submit your questions in advance or get more information, reach out to [email protected] with the subject "Chats with the General Chairman."   Call In Info (Audio Only) 1 703-719-4689,,309044112#   United States, Arlington (888) 304-9471,,309044112#   United States (Toll-free) Phone Conference ID: 309 044 112#

  • CVSA's Operation Safe Driver Week is underway! July 7, 2024 marks the start of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) weeklong driver-safety traffic enforcement initiative, Operation Safe Driver Week. From July 7 to 13, drivers exhibiting unsafe driving behaviors on our roadways, such as speeding, distracted driving, aggressive driving, following too closely, etc., will be pulled over by law enforcement personnel and may be issued a warning or citation.   Operation Safe Driver Week aims to improve the driving behaviors of passenger vehicle drivers and commercial motor vehicle drivers through educational and traffic enforcement strategies and interactions with law enforcement. The goal is to prevent crashes caused by unsafe driving behaviors.   Law enforcement personnel will report applicable interactions with drivers and citations and warnings to CVSA. That data will be gathered and analyzed, and the results will be released publicly later this year. View the results from previous years of Operation Safe Driver Week.   Each year, Operation Safe Driver Week focuses on a specific unsafe driving behavior in an effort to combat that dangerous habit. The focus area for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week is reckless, careless or dangerous driving. Any person who drives a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is driving recklessly. Careless/dangerous driving is defined as operating a vehicle without due care and attention or reasonable consideration for other motorists or people on the road.   Operation Safe Driver Week is a North American initiative with participation from states/provinces and territories in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. There were 42,795 fatal traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2022. In 2021, there were 1,768 motor vehicle fatalities in Canada. And in 2022, Mexico reported 15,979 road deaths.   Another important aspect of Operation Safe Driver Week is driver education. CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Program offers resources for teen and new drivers and commercial motor vehicle drivers, along with safe-driving public service announcement videos, which are publicly available for download and distribution.   Through initiatives like Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement jurisdictions, the motor carrier industry and federal agencies work together toward the same goal – preventing crashes, injuries and fatalities on North America’s roadways. https://www.cvsa.org/
