We proudly co-sponsored the 2nd annual JOLT (Just Organization Leading Transition) conference held in Montrose, Colo. on June 27-28. Their important mission is to advocate for, communicate with and educate coal-impacted communities on transition efforts, while promoting an all of the above energy mix. Travis Sondrol, our Craig Station Plant Manager, participated in a geothermal panel, along with other energy leaders. He discussed the retirement of Craig Station between 2025 and 2028, and the continuing need for dispatchable resources (which are resources that can be turned on or turned up as needed), including geothermal resources, that help keep power stable, reliable and affordable.

We're advancing our energy transition by filing an unopposed, comprehensive settlement in our 2023 Electric Resource Plan proceeding, which if approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, we will begin the procurement process for new resources, leading to an 89% reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions in Colorado and 70% clean energy used by our members systemwide in 2030. “With the engagement of our members and stakeholders, Tri-State is advancing our transformative resource plan, preserving reliable, affordable and responsible power for our members, and helping meet the needs of transitioning communities in northwest Colorado,” said our CEO, Duane Highley. The settlement includes community assistance to support northwest Colorado communities as Craig Station fully retires in 2028. “The energy industry is pivotal to our local economy and makes up such a large component of our tax base,” said Craig Mayor Chris Nichols. “We are pleased that the commitments contained within the Settlement Agreement represent Tri-State’s reinvestment in the community that has anchored Craig Station for decades.” “It would be hard to overstate how truly groundbreaking this agreement is,” said Moffat County Commissioner Melody Villard. “The commitments made by Tri-State ensure that the communities are not left behind in the energy transition.” “We will continue to work with our employees, the City of Craig and Moffat County for years to come,” said Highley. Notably, Tri-State’s preferred plan would deliver competitive wholesale rates to Tri-State’s members and meet both industry standard reliability metrics and Tri-State’s heightened “Level II” reliability metrics, which assess electric system resilience in extreme summer and winter weather conditions. “Enhanced power reliability for rural communities remains central to Tri-State’s resource planning,” said Dennis Herman, general manager of Tri-State member Highline Electric Association (Holyoke, Colo.), “Tri-State's preferred plan adds significant renewable resources while demonstrating how to deliver reliable power to its members, even in extreme weather events.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/gNWtJ9Y9

In collaboration with Basin and several of our members, we were proud to donate $22,000 to the 26th Annual Cattleman’s Ball in Scotts Bluff County, Neb. The Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska is a charity that raises millions of dollars for cancer research. Ninety percent of the profits support the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha, while 10%is donated back to local health and wellness programs. Held in a different, unique location each year, the Cattlemen’s Ball allows host communities to showcase their area of the state. Supporting the community is a core principle for all cooperatives, and it is a privilege to contribute to this cause alongside Chimney Rock PPD, High West Energy, Midwest Electric, Northwest Rural PPD, Niobrara Electric Association, Panhandle Rural Electric Membership Association, Roosevelt PPD, and Wheat Belt Public Power District. It’s easy to fantasize about world-class skiing, white water rafting and breathtaking hikes in your backyard, but the reality of moving to the mountains is more difficult; especially for essential workers. To address those housing shortages, the Town of Buena Vista and local building manufacturer Fading West recently broke ground on the Midland Apartments; a 60-unit, income-restricted building that will provide much-needed affordable housing and childcare in the area. With an experienced construction partner and emphasis on energy efficiency, the Midland Apartments are setting a new standard for livability while focusing on future community growth.
