  • TRA's 2024 Art Contest has begun! This year's theme "The Trinity River: Our Shared Home" invites students to explore the interconnected story of the Trinity River Basin. It’s a place where millions of Texans and a wide range of species coexist, relying on its rich resources and diverse ecosystems. Through your artwork, you can depict the vital relationships between the river, its inhabitants, and the broader environment. Our actions shape the health of this shared home, influencing the future of human communities, the well-being of the river, and plant and animal life, including those that are endangered or at risk. The contest is open to 1st - 8th grade students who live in or go to school in TRA Board Counties (Anderson, Chambers, Dallas, Ellis, Freestone, Henderson, Houston, Kaufman, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Navarro, Polk, San Jacinto, Tarrant, Trinity, Walker) and 1st - 8th grade students living in or going to school in TRA customer cities outside of those counties (Flower Mound, Argyle, Northlake, Roanoke, Justin). Winners will be chosen from each grade level, and will receive prizes and recognition! Entries will close on September 30, 2024. To read contest rules, find resources to learn about the theme, learn about judging and prizes, and download the entry form, visit our website at https://trinityra.org/art

  • Earlier this week, Technical Services and Basin Planning staff joined Andrew Brinker, the lead scientist for the Trinity River Turtle Survey, to learn about the different turtle species in the area. During the survey, TRA staff learned how to set up turtle traps, handle and identify various species, and tag each turtle for a long-term study. Brinker, who teaches at Fort Worth ISD and Tarrant County College, started the survey in 2017. Since then, he has identified and tagged over 1,000 turtles in the DFW metroplex. In this recent survey, TRA staff tagged four different species: the Red-eared Slider, the Mississippi Map Turtle, the Razor-backed Musk Turtle, and the Spiny Softshell Turtle.

The Trinity River Authority Lake Livingston Dam repairs slated for completion Monday, July 8, were completed and tested Sunday, July 7. The completed repairs will help ensure that the dam is ready for the potential heavy rainfall related to Hurricane Beryl. So far, about 4-5 inches of rain fell in the area. If additional rain falls, related to the storm, the dam should perform as designed and handle the potential high-flow event without impacting the integrity of the dam. Ten of the 12 dam gates are in full operation. The two gates that are not in operation are slated to be back online in the fall. For more information, visit the TRA website at trinityra.org.
