About us
The mission of the Transportation Infrastructure Durability Center (TIDC) is to develop innovative, sustainable, next-generation solutions to improve the durability and extend the lifespan of existing and new transportation assets in New England and beyond. We are committed to making dramatic impacts in the cost-effectiveness of transportation infrastructure through transformative research, education, outreach, workforce development, and technology transfer through four research thrust areas; 1) monitoring and assessment, 2) new materials for longevity and constructability, 3) new systems for longevity and constructability, and 4) connectivity for enhanced asset and performance management.

UMaine’s Transportation Infrastructure Durability Center advances research on newer, more sustainable materials that lower carbon emissions including lightweight, corrosion-resistant alternatives to concrete and steel girders; 3D-printed diffusers for the rehabilitation of highway culverts; reusable 3D printed formwork for the placement of concrete ballast retainers; and analysis of rail and highway structures using unmanned aerial vehicles and artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The center is a U.S. Department of Transportation University Transportation Center based within the UMaine Advanced Structures & Composites Center and includes a consortium of six New England universities including the University of Connecticut, the University of Vermont, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Western New England University, and the University of Rhode Island in collaboration with the Departments of Transportation (DOTs) in six New England states. Funding was secured through a six-year grant awarded by the U.S. DOT following a New England-wide competition among university consortiums. The girders are designed to be lighter, lower maintenance and longer lasting than traditional highway bridge construction and replacement girders. They also have a smaller carbon footprint.

Congratulations to MassDOT Deputy Administrator and Chief Engineer Carrie Lavallee for being selected for Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS Boston Chapter) “Woman of the Year,” and the Rail and Transit Division, which is led by Administrator Meredith Slesinger, for being selected for the “Innovative Transportation Solutions” award. “It is such an honor to have Carrie and Meredith doing such great work and providing expert leadership,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt. “I want to congratulate them and their teams for their respective, well-deserved recognitions by WTS-Boston, and I thank them for their ongoing service to deliver reliable connectivity to the people of Massachusetts.” Ms. Lavallee was honored as “Woman of the Year” for 2024. In her current role as Deputy Administrator and Chief Engineer at the Highway Division, Ms. Lavallee has been responsible for MassDOT’s expanded $2.1 billion a year capital program from last year, which included new federal infrastructure funding and one of the largest investments in bridges in the Commonwealth’s history. MassDOT’s Rail and Transit Division, which has coordinated the MassDOT Compass Rail Program/Inland Route: Right of Way Modeling Partnership with Amtrak and CSX, was honored with the “Innovative Transportation Solutions Award” for 2024. In September 2023, MassDOT was awarded a $108 million Federal Railroad Administration CRISI grant to fund trackwork that would enable two daily round trips on the Inland Route between Boston, Springfield, and New Haven, Connecticut. MassDOT’s first step towards advancing this important passenger rail initiative was establishing a partnership with Amtrak and CSX to develop a simulation model of the Boston & Albany rail corridor.
