EVs need DC fast charging to work for long highway trips, but retailers and merchants need to know it's worth their time and energy to install them. In this episode Max Patten sits down with Karl Doenges and John Eichberger, to understand how fuel retailers can play a major role in expanding the country's immature and sometimes unreliable network of DC fast chargers for electric cars—just like they've done with gas before. 🌞 Summer's Over, and I'm Back! 🌞 Hi everyone! With summer winding down (at least in this hemisphere!), I’m excited to resume my monthly newsletter. If you're not on the list yet, you can sign up here: https://lnkd.in/ezteNbcB. 🔍 Let’s Talk About Interconnection Hell in the U.S. I wanted to share some thoughts on the current challenges we’re facing with energy project interconnections in the U.S. 📊 Visual Capitalist, in collaboration with the National Public Utilities Council, created a map showing the average age of active energy projects in interconnection queues by state, using data from Berkeley Lab. Here are some key stats: 1. Since 2015, the generation capacity entering queues has risen by 550%! 2. Average queue time has jumped from 3 years to 5 years. 3. Only 19% of projects make it to commercial operations due to the backlog. 🚨 What’s the Impact? Most of these projects are wind, solar, and battery storage—the foundation of a decarbonized grid. And while I’m not a utility expert, I am an #energy and #transport expert. Here’s why this matters for our sector: A decarbonized grid is essential for transport energy decarbonization. Think about #electrification and #greenhydrogen for road fleets, #aviation, and #shipping. Even lowering the carbon intensity of #biofuels may depend on green hydrogen, which, in turn, depends on these projects. ⚡ Solutions?? When you factor in permitting timelines (another 4 years!), it feels like we’re stuck in interconnection hell. 😰 But the good news? It’s fixable! State and federal reforms are being proposed and even implemented. Both presidential candidates have acknowledged the need for reform—a rare moment of bipartisan agreement. Let’s see where this goes! Coming Soon! A New Report: Evaluating the Viability of Commercially Deploying E-Fuels in Road Transport The United States road transport sector accounts for 23% of US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Policies have been put in place to reduce emissions in the road transport sector – both on a federal and state level in the US, as well as around the globe. Many decarbonization technologies are available and are being incentivized under such policies, each facing a unique set of challenges as they are deployed commercially. Amongst these options, e-fuels (or synthetic fuels) are a renewable technology that can be used in existing and new vehicles while potentially yielding near-zero emissions. This report, available in the coming weeks, will provide will provide a highly detailed education for defining and describing the importance of e-fuels in the on-road transportation sector. #efuels #decarbonization #syntheticfuels #renewabletechnology #ghgemissions John Eichberger Jeff Hove Karl Doenges Marjorie Frankel Liz Menz Amy Kalafa Meagan Ray Ron Sabia Judge Dobrient John Metz Ryan Scott Jonathan Hackett Steve Przesmitzki Carrie Simms Andrew G.
