Cities can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by rezoning single-family housing areas for denser, mixed-use developments, leading to fewer car trips and lower vehicle miles traveled. A Rocky Mountain Institute study found that building denser housing in walkable neighborhoods could cut annual emissions by 31 million tons, the equivalent of removing 6.5 million cars from the road. https://lnkd.in/gPVGWEXy #SustainableCities #LandUseReform #DenseDevelopment #ClimateAction #UrbanPlanning

San Francisco’s crackdown on homeless encampments has led to a surge in arrests, with 215 unhoused people detained since Aug. 1, primarily for illegal lodging. State and local governments in the U.S. face growing challenges from climate change, such as more frequent storms and rising sea levels, which exacerbate decades of underinvestment in critical infrastructure like roads, bridges, and water systems. These climate impacts are expected to significantly increase repair and adaptation costs, potentially raising infrastructure spending needs by hundreds of billions of dollars while straining government budgets and credit ratings. https://lnkd.in/gPThKaq8 #ClimateResilience #InfrastructureCrisis #SustainableCities #AdaptationCosts #ResilientFuture

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Transportation Accountability Act, AB 2086, authored by Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo and co-sponsored by Transform and the Greenlining Institute. The bill will bring much-needed transparency to Caltrans spending and require Caltrans to provide a financial analysis of the California Transportation Plan. It will also require Caltrans to expand the project information publicly available through its online dashboard to relate spending to performance metrics. https://lnkd.in/gURgtM45 #TransportationEquity #AB2086 #ClimateActionNow #SustainableInfrastructure

A new report from the Anti-Police-Terror Project highlights how maintaining the current transportation system is inequitable, economically unsustainable, and environmentally harmful. It advocates for police-free transportation, fare-free transit, and investment in safer, more just infrastructure for BIPOC communities. https://lnkd.in/g2upnM3R
