About us

Wauwatosa School District is a high-achieving, forward-thinking, and richly diverse public school district serving about 7,200 students and families. Our educational community’s long history of excellence has been recognized both regionally and nationally. In 2017, the Washington Post named both of our high schools on its “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” list. The U.S. News and World Report has repeatedly recognized Wauwatosa East High School as one of the Top 25 High Schools in the state and our District has routinely “Exceeded Expectations” on state Report Cards issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Our District consists of 16 schools: 11 elementary, two middle schools, two high schools and the Wauwatosa Virtual Academy. Among our schools are Wauwatosa Montessori and Wauwatosa STEM. We also offer a full STEM program at Underwood Elementary and at both of our middle schools. All of our schools offer robust parent choices when selecting educational opportunities for your child. Additionally, our District provides the education for several county programs including Children’s Wisconsin and Vel R. Phillips School. We believe relationships are at the core of the success of our students, teachers, and administrators. To achieve that success, our decisions are guided by our strategic plan which focuses on: Academic Performance Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Accessibility Social, Emotional Mental Health High-Quality Staff Culture Community Operations Wauwatosa School District is a connected, inclusive community of learners. We serve as active advocates to provide equitable access to excellent academic, co-curricular, and social-emotional learning opportunities that empower every student to thrive as passionate, productive, and creative citizens. We look forward to being your educational community. https://www.wauwatosaschools.org/o/wsd/page/social-media-community-standards

  • An approved operational referendum would have a property tax impact of $1.67 per year for every $1,000 of assessed property value. The owner of a home assessed at $300,000 would see a tax impact of $501 per year (or $41.75 per month). An approved capital referendum would have a property tax impact of $0.43 per year for every $1,000 of assessed property value. The owner of a home assessed at $300,000 would see a tax impact of $129 per year (or $10.75 per month). Find a property tax calculator at this link: https://lnkd.in/gzv_ifZ9

  • The Wauwatosa School District has a series of facility needs across our schools. At least $150 million in deferred maintenance needs have been identified across all our buildings. Our secondary schools, which were not designed to accommodate modern learning needs, contain foundational systems and structures that are well past their end-of-life expectancy. Inequity also exists among our elementary school buildings. One of the two questions on the ballot November 5 is a proposed capital referendum. • While it would be possible to make substantial cuts to close our current funding gap, these cuts would adversely impact the student learning experience in significant ways. Further, the community survey conducted in March and April 2024 indicated that it does not support cuts to social-emotional support services, teaching staff, elementary school specials, or middle and high school athletics, fine arts, and electives. On the ballot November 5 will be both an operational referendum and a capital referendum. Learn more and browse answers to additional frequently asked questions: https://lnkd.in/gzv_ifZ9

  • Congratulations to Lauren Roznowski Hayden on receiving the prestigious Fulbright Distinguished Educator Award! 🎓🌟 This summer, Ms. Roz spent six weeks in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, working with teachers and students at Victoriano Lopez Escuela de Musica on best practices in ensemble teaching. The experience wrapped up with a beautiful concert, titled “United by Music.” 🎶 Her students in San Pedro Sula and Wauwatosa exchanged letters and hope to continue this meaningful connection throughout the school year! 🌍❤️

  • Like many school districts statewide, the Wauwatosa School District is facing financial challenges due to factors largely out of our control. In Wisconsin, a state-imposed revenue limit restricts the amount of money school districts can receive through state aid and local property taxes. Expenses are on the rise, affecting all aspects of our district’s operations. This is especially true in areas like mental health and special education, where the District does not receive enough funding to provide state- and federally mandated services for our students. The District plans to use its fund balance to fill the budget gap for the 2024-25 school year. Beyond that, we must either significantly reduce expenses or seek additional revenue to balance the budget. One of the two questions on the ballot November 5 is a proposed operational referendum.
