Commercial buildings are a “Goldilocks” solution when it comes to expanding grid capacity through virtual power plants. They’re big enough to add significant energy generation and storage to the grid but small enough to quickly install: ◾️ Commercial-sized solar and battery installations are subject to far fewer studies, reviews, and permitting obstacles than grid-scale projects. ◾️Utility-sized projects typically take 5-10 years to complete. Commercial installations can be done in a handful of months. Under this model, schools, warehouses, office buildings, stadiums, and manufacturing facilities actually power the communities they sit in, increasing reliability, sustainability, and affordability for everyone. And what better way to meet rising electricity demand than empowering individuals and communities to control and produce their own renewable energy? Want to know more? Today's events shows how important it is for us 🇺🇸 to secure our energy infrastructure. And as Nate Walkingshaw said, it starts with our supply chain.

We at Torus have been showcasing our full-stack, vertically integrated product line, where we control every aspect—from hardware and firmware to software—right here in the U.S. This includes managing the entire supply chain. Today is a clear example of why we’ve taken this approach. Many underestimate the importance of securing embedded firmware and communications, but the risks of not controlling production and supply are becoming evident as witnessed in today’s events In the coming weeks, there will be much more reported on supply chain vulnerabilities and the consequences of interception.

We envision a world where every commercial building is a mini power plant. Here’s what that means: The grid currently operates top-down. Big power plants produce electricity, which is sent to homes and businesses via a network of transmission and distribution lines. By equipping commercial buildings with Torus systems, we’re creating a network of smaller points of energy generation and storage. We can then virtually connect these individual systems to the grid. So, rather than having one power plant, the grid now has hundreds of smaller points of energy generation and storage it can leverage to help meet supply and demand. Curious what makes commercial buildings so perfect for this model? Learn more here: https://ow.ly/rKRq50Tpqg7

AI’s biggest obstacle? Energy infrastructure. In the future, AI models may require 1 GW of power. To accommodate larger models, we’ll need more data centers. To power more data centers, we’ll need more power plants, transmission lines, substations, renewable energy farms, and more. Infrastructure projects aren’t easy to stand up quickly. They’re often prone to construction delays and lengthy permitting hurdles. So what’s the solution? Distributed energy storage and generation. Learn more here: https://ow.ly/2Ofa50TmSW9

We’re creating 172 new manufacturing jobs in Utah 🇺🇸 Building up our operations locally offers so many benefits and opportunities: ◾️We utilize Utah’s incredibly talented workforce ◾️We bring economic opportunity to the cities and counties we call home ◾️We position our state and country at the forefront of energy innovation We owe a special thanks to the Utah Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity for helping to make this expansion possible. The average salary for these new positions will be at least 110% of the Salt Lake County average wage—making a big difference for many families. Utah is an amazing place to build a business, and we’re thrilled to be growing even deeper roots here. 🔋Learn more about the announcement: https://ow.ly/FX4050TmcFN

Our CEO Nate Walkingshaw recently wrote an article for Data Center Knowledge on how AI’s massive energy needs will reshape how we power our communities. “The AI-driven surge in data center power demand is not just a trend – it's a seismic shift that will reshape our thinking about energy consumption.”

Data center growth is already being constrained by the grid. Northern Virginia—the country’s leading market—is considering stronger permitting requirements for new facilities. Silicon Valley Power has started limiting many proposed data centers in Northern California to a maximum electricity allocation of 2 MW. To prevent these slow downs, an estimated 47 gigawatts of new power generation will be required by 2030. “I actually think before we hit [computing constraints] we’ll run into energy constraints.” -Mark Zuckerberg “I think we still don’t appreciate the energy needs of [AI]. We need fusion or we need, like, radically cheaper solar plus storage, or something, at massive scale—like, a scale that no one is really planning for.” - Sam Altman We’re examining the current landscape for power demand, data centers, and AI, and forecasting what the future might look like based on what the industry’s biggest players are signaling. Data centers and AI require A LOT of power 💡 We’re not kidding: Utah’s entire grid demand is currently 3.5-4 GW of electricity. If granted, current proposals for new data center construction would add another 8 GW, effectively tripling power demand. 🎙️“The AI-driven surge in data center power demand is not just a trend—it's a seismic shift that will reshape our thinking about energy consumption in the age of AI.” -Nate Walkingshaw, Torus CEO So starting this week, we’re exploring one simple question—where is this power going to come from?
