It's smiles all around with our growing Raleigh team! 😊
A great evening with our growing Toole Design Group team in Raleigh. Exploring newer development created plenty of conversations about mobility, plants 🪴, food, and an amazing slide 🛝. I could not be more excited to work with this team on so many exciting projects.

Much of our transportation system is designed to carry more traffic than it actually does. Why are overbuilt roads a problem? Senior Engineer Mariel Colman, P.E., AICP shares her thoughts on why wide, multi-lane roadways are dangerous, inefficient, inequitable, and unnecessary — and she challenges fellow engineers to stop widening roads under the guise of safety improvement. Read Mariel's take on how engineers can be part of the solution. 👇

Last month, as part of the Ride Island Implementation Plan, Aquidneck Island stakeholders put their wheels to the ground in Cambridge, MA, for some bike network inspiration. From contra-flow and parking-protected bicycle lanes to bike signals at intersections, they experienced firsthand what it's like to bike when separated and protected from cars. Thanks to our friends at Bike Newport for capturing a recap of this fun and informative tour led by Jeffrey Rosenblum, one of the network's original planners. Check it out to see all the infrastructure — and bonus points if you can spot all seven Toole Design staff members! 👇

Every aspect of car ownership is more expensive for Black Americans, according to a research study co-authored by Quinn Molloy, Ph.D. of our Boston team. Some key findings include: 👉 9% more Black households are cost-burdened by car loans than white households. 👉 18% more Black households are cost-burdened by car repairs than white households. 👉 21% more Black households are cost-burdened by gas expenses than white households. 👉 29% more Black households are cost-burdened by car insurance than white households. Public transit was the only area where Black households experienced fewer cost burdens, which highlights the need for diverse transportation options. Reducing our vehicle-dependence is key to promoting transportation equity and building more sustainable communities. Check out a summary of the study in this Streetsblog USA article: https://lnkd.in/gpwWYdET

Our Seattle team has been busy! 🚴🛴🚶♀️ We're proud to be part of planning the next wave of safer, connected active transportation networks across the region.
We're very excited that earlier this year we saw a few of our Toole Design Group active transportation plans adopted by local city councils. These are some of our favorite projects, helping our client assess their existing bike and ped facilities and plan out how to turn them into safe and connected networks. Our team developed both the Bicycle Master Plan and the Pedestrian Master Plan for the City of Bellingham with support from our friends at Transpo Group. Both plans were adopted in May. The bike plan can be found here https://lnkd.in/gphvxaiu and the ped plan here https://lnkd.in/gnDjb-C4. In April the City of Oak Harbor, WA adopted the Active Transportation Plan we developed and it can be found here (starts on page 213) https://lnkd.in/gFtWqtrz. Many of our staff in our Seattle office had the opportunity to work on these projects including Anish Tailor, Ryan O'Hara, M.S., P.E., Cody Wuestney, PE, Alex DuVall, PE, RSP1, Jakob Ward, PE, Maimoona Rahim, Allison Phillips and well as many others who have moved on to other opportunities like Michael Hintze, AICP, RSP1, Sofia Gulaid, Quinn Kelly, Brian Almdale, Saira Shahid, Tyler Wong and Manuel Soto.

“At other firms, I didn’t always feel safe or comfortable sharing my lived experience. I felt that I had to adopt a fake persona to be seen and heard. So I made myself a promise: I was going to find a company where I could bring my complete self to work. As a new hire at Toole Design, I was nervous because I had never come out at work as being part of the queer community. Luckily for me, another person did their intro presentation before me and also came out as queer. I was so relieved! Everyone was so welcoming. I knew I had a safe community in our office and across the company. Contributing our ideas, expertise, and lived experience (as much as we are comfortable doing so) requires a level of vulnerability and bravery. The simple act of sharing can help others feel safe to do the same.” — Alex DuVall, PE, RSP1, Project Planner II, Seattle #PrideMonth
